Rolando McClain explains how Jason Garrett compares to Nick Saban

OXNARD, Calif. – Rolando McClain spent three years at Alabama playing for Nick Saban. He’s entering his second year with Jason Garrett.

Garrett was a member of Saban’s coaching staff when the four-time national champion was head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2005-2006. Both coaches speak fondly of their time together.

How does McClain compare the two?

“Coach Garrett is one of a kind, like coach Saban is one of a kind,” McClain said. “They do things different, but at the same time they are similar just because they preach the same attitude. And it’s just bringing your best, whatever it is, every day. And they push you to bring the best out of you. For me, that’s like being at home. It ain’t fair to a player if a coach ever gives you slack. Coach Saban didn’t do it. And coach Garrett don’t do it either. If I had to say, the one thing is in common with those two, that would be it.”

Garrett left the Dolphins in 2007 to become the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator. He held that position until midway through the 2010 season when he was elevated to head coach. Since then, the Cowboys have gone 41-31.

In the process, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo says Garrett has evolved into someone who can coach every position.

“I’ve been around Jason a long time,” Romo said. “I think that at this point he’s, for me, grown into just an outstanding football coach. I mean he could coach any position at this point and not everybody can do that. I think he just has a way of communicating with people and there’s a reason he’s been here so long. He’s the best coach. I mean you see it. I think when you’re around him for a long period of time you recognize all the gifts that he has and that he brings toward people.”

Dez Bryant recognizes those gifts. The All-Pro wide receiver recently said Garrett “means the world” to him while discussing what he’s learned from their time together.

“I remember when I really just started paying attention to coach Garrett, it might’ve been three years ago,” Bryant said. “He used to write something down on a piece of paper and he still does this after every practice. I remember I just found it, I didn’t ask him what he was writing about, but I looked at that as a consistent. Like, ‘Damn.’ Just that small thing I caught on to that and I’m like, ‘That’s how I want to be. I want to be just like that.’

“And you know whenever Coach Garrett tells me something it’s all legit. He’s not fooling around with nobody and the only thing you can do is respect him and do exactly what he asks and at least try to do the best that he asks.”
