I'm a big fan of Russell and believe he's a winner. Outside of the that very big gaffe in the SB, the guy has shown time and time again that he is a clutch player who gets it going in big games or big drives.

Now, is he a 4,000 yard, 30 TD, 35 attempt guy? No, but a guy like Wilson gets our Parcells teams of 2005 and 2006 into the playoffs and probably beyond.

With that said, that does seem like a bit much for a guy who is not an elite passer of the football.

I hope that means they can't re-sign Bobby Wagner. I'd be thrilled to bring him in.

Agreed. I don't think he'll ever be one of the premiere passers of the league but he's one of those guys who is efficient in what he does and he finds ways to win.

The dollar amount of the contract is high but that's just the cost of doing business in today's NFL where even scrubs like Cutler are pulling in $20M per year deals.

So I have no problem with the dollar amount.

I'm not going to say he doesn't deserve it because when you look at the contracts being handed out he clearly deserves something in this ballpark. With that said, there is a reason people say things like, "he's a winner", "he comes up big in big moments", "he's clutch", etc. despite the fact that he is not an elite passer and is prone to long stretches of average to below average play.

That reason is because his defense and running game keeps games close or flat out wins them despite his average play, allowing him to come up with a few big plays despite being no better than average to above average in most games. Now that he has this huge contract the team won't be able to afford the same type of depth on defense with guys starting to come off their rookie deals or demanding more money.

The ultimate irony is that you have QB's like Eli, Flacco and now Wilson who win SB's on the backs of their defense/running games despite not being truly elite QB's, yet they get paid like an elite QB because of that SB, and then their teams cant afford to keep the very same reasons they won those SB's because of the contract they gave to the QB.

This will happen with Seattle in the near future, just give it time.

I remember a moment in the NFC championship where he had thrown more interceptions than receptions. Can't imagine a QB being thought of as clutch or big in big games after that.

A lot of Russell's success is due to Lynch. Without him the team and Russell look average on offense.

Yup, Lynch and the defense are the reason for their success. To be fair to Wilson, he hasn't had much in the way of receivers over his career, so maybe he'll be better now that he has Jimmy Graham, but I don't think he's much more than an above average QB in this league. Certainly not worth 22+ million per year.
