Cowboys DE Jeremy Mincey not at camp as he seeks re-worked deal

  • Todd Archer, ESPN Staff Writer

OXNARD, Calif. -- When the Dallas Cowboys arrived at Pt. Mugu Naval Air Station on Tuesday, defensive end Jeremy Mincey was not there.

Mincey is looking for a reworked contract and has been in discussions with the team since February. He is scheduled to be a free agent following the season after signing a two-year deal worth $3 million in 2014 that included $2 million guaranteed.

Orlando Scandrick when he was set to make $1.5 million. The Cowboys added a year and $9.5 million to his deal. Scandrick will earn $4 million this year, and his 2016 base salary was upped to $5 million.

With the deal, the Cowboys kept a key piece of their defense happy while also maintaining solid salary-cap footing.

With the recent deal for star wide receiver Dez Bryant, the Cowboys have plenty of salary-cap room to rework Mincey's deal or sign defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford, who is also set to be a free agent when the season ends. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the Cowboys have roughly $17.8 million in cap space, but that does not account for the per-game roster bonuses Greg Hardy and Rolando McClain will earn during the season.

What? The dude is under contract. Just start fining him money. Nice player but come on. Average 31 year old DE's are holding out these days? He is the fourth best guy on the roster. I'm not redoing that deal.

I will admit, he was our best lineman last year, but frankly, if he thinks that deserves a raise or more money up-front, he can go eff himself.

I agree, fine his ass until he knows his place as a journeyman DE.

He sees the 4 game suspension for Hardy and thinks thats his leverage.

So the fact he knows he is inferior, he is demanding a raise to be a place holder.

I'd cut him now for being a total loser.

He should be at the stage in his career where he should be thankful. He's a POS journeyman.

He needs to get a grip on himself. And if he cannot, well, bye.

Thanks for the magical six sack season, you rule.

Actually makes me wonder if he just doesn't want to go through the hot ass tough training camp practices. You see that out of lazy vets sometimes.

I wouldn't cut him only because that would allow him to go sign a new deal with a new team. Screw him, I'd hold on to him just to spite him. At his cost it wouldn't really make much difference. Maybe it would teach other players they can't F with us in the future.

I'm not even mad at Mincey, this is just funny to me.

I'm not going to say he should be thankful just to have a roster spot, but come on. Some one needs to tell this idiot that for a hold out to work you actually have to be irreplacable.

(I suppose the other option is for the GM to be an idiot. On second thought, this is probably a good strategy for him.)

That or not be under contract. Like a restricted free agent who is tendered or someone who has been tagged. This idiot signed his contract just last off season. I think what he probably wants is an extension or to be released now. He sees the writing on the wall. He isn't going to put up the same numbers this year because of our talent and depth at DE now. Which means when he hits free agency next year his value will be shot at 32 years old coming off a couple sack season.

Yea, he knows his value will never again be higher than it is now considering his relatively strong season last year, the fact that Hardy is out the first 4 games and we don't really have a whole lot else besides two inexperienced guys in Gregory and Lawrence. Once Hardy is back and the season gets going you know his playing time will drop, along with his stats, and then his value, and he will be a 32 year old UFA, going on 33 without much of a market.

I don't think he wants to be released because I really doubt he could get much more than 2-3 a year on the open market, if that, but I think he knows this is his last chance to cash in a little bit, so I can't really blame him. He's a somewhat valuable piece considering his versatility and leadership, but I wouldn't sweat this, he has no leverage. The only leverage he has is the threat of playing like shit, holding out will do nothing but take money out of his pocket and if he misses any regular season games it will only lower his league-wide value.

I might throw another year on his contract and another million or two in guaranteed money just to placate him (we have plenty of space and I couldn't care less about Jerry's money), plus I wouldn't mind keeping him around as depth for one more year past this one, but if he wants anything more than a nominal amount he can either pay the fines or show up. In the mean time it's just more reps for Gregory, Lawrence, Gardner, etc.

George Selvie had 7 sacks in 2013 and 3 last year, he got a 1 year, 1.4 million contract from the Giants this off-season. Mincey is older, and I could easily see him putting up only about 4 or 5 sacks this year, with less being a distinct possibility depending on the development of Gregory/Lawrence and how rusty Hardy is.

Basically, the guy can go F himself. He's a better player than Selvie and I wouldn't mind having him around on the cheap for 2016, that's why I'd be willing to throw another year and a little more in guaranteed money, but the fact that this guy is holding out at all is comical honestly.

I actually think you're being overly optimistic on his sack numbers this year unless you think he shifts down to DT or something on passing downs. I just don't think he will play much on passing downs this year with Hardy, Gregory and Lawrence. Or at least he shouldn't be playing much on those downs.

I agree though, I wouldn't care if we added one year to his deal. Other then I don't really want the other players to get the impression that they can just pout and get their way. As a fourth DE who can stop the run I think Mincey is a useful rotational guy. There is some value to that, just not a lot.

There is nothing about Oxnard that is "hot ass tough".
Missouri is hot as shit right now. I guess in my mind everywhere is smoldering. You're right though, Oxnard is not. Like 60 some degrees right now.

They are having the Camp kickoff press conference on right now and Goof Son impressed me when he basically addressed Mincey in an indirect way and shot down the idea of doling out more cash that affects this year's cap.

Stephen Jones: Mincey will be fined for missing camp

Jeremy Mincey didn't report to training camp in an effort to get a new deal, but the Dallas Cowboys don't plan to play ball. They are prepared to fine the veteran for missing time.

"I think it is (disappointing), he is a player who is under contract and we expect all players under contract to be here," Executive vice president Stephen Jones said Wednesday said. "Jeremy obviously did a great job for us last year, he was a big part of the success on the defensive part of the football and we have nothing but respect for him, but he is under contract, I think he signed that contract last year, his representative was there, he was all for it and he signed it.

"It's not a long term contract, it's over at the end of this year, but we fully expect him to be here and if he's not obviously there is recourse for us as well, in terms of there will be fines accordingly if he misses camp. It is disappointing, we expect him to be here and we want him to be here."

Mincey is subject to a $30,000 fine for each day he misses.

Cowboys players reported to camp Wednesday.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Mincey wouldn't report to camp as he's been seeking a contract extension since February.

Mincey is set to make $1.5 million in the final year of a two-year deal signed in 2014. The 31-year-old defensive lineman led the Cowboys in sacks and quarterback pressures last year.

With the additions of Greg Hardy, rookie Randy Gregory and an expected leap from Demarcus Lawrence, Mincey's production could decrease in 2015. He wants to secure his future before that possibility comes to fruition.

The Cowboys stance, however, seems clear: Hold out and lose more money.
