Rolando McClain rehabbing, but Jason Garrett not sure LB will show up next week

Todd Archer, ESPN Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas -- Unless Dez Bryant signs his franchise tag tender soon, he is not required to show up for the Dallas Cowboys' mandatory minicamp next week.

The same can't be said for Rolando McClain, however, and coach Jason Garrett was not sure if the linebacker will make an appearance.

McClain has remained in Alabama to rehab his surgically-repaired right knee and has not been with the team through the organized team activities.

"Well, the minicamp is mandatory," Garrett said. "It's the only thing in the offseason that is mandatory, so it's important for us to make sure that's clear to everybody and express that to our players. There are some specific situations where things that you do in a mandatory fashion don't always happen. You know players miss practice during the season for different reasons and those are mandatory. So we'll work through the specific situations as we go. Rolando is doing a good job with his rehab, and we'll see what his plans are for next week."

A few years ago former cornerback Mike Jenkins chose to do the bulk of his rehab from reconstructive shoulder surgery away from the team and was not 100 percent by the time training camp started. McClain had arthroscopic surgery to clear up an issue that bothered him last year and did not dissipate with rest in the offseason.

Players are subject to fines if they do not appear at the minicamp.

When asked directly if McClain would show up next week, Garrett said, "Yeah, I don't want to get into much more detail than that."

It's obvious McClain doesn't like the practice/training aspect of football and is constantly finding ways to get out of it. If he performs in games, I don't care that much. But it's a shame because it seems like he could be so much more than he is if he was more dedicated .

I tend to agree with this. Probably a big part of the reason he retired a couple of times.

Could be part of the reason he keeps getting hurt, too.

Well, not fulfilling his potential is reason enough to care more about him not practicing/training than you do, plus.....

There's this as well.

If the guy were handling all of his football related responsibilities, he might be in better condition to play more often and not be so susceptible to injuries. His questionable character and dedication were why I said all along about him that I wouldn't miss him if he left.

He's just way too untrustworthy for me.

I didn't care much about it last year because he was showing up big time on Sundays for the first part of the season, but by the end of the season his impact had diminished and act was getting real old. Then he left that Green Bay game with supposed concussion symptoms. Now he pretty much decides he can just hang out in Tuscaloosa instead of joining the team. Not sure how long I would put up with him as he is the classic "it's always something with this guy".

Not sure it's the best precedent that guys who don't like practice don't have to.

Sure, last year it was fine because everything went well. But if things start to go south, this is the kind of thing that teammates get pissed about.

The Kraken will straighten him out.
