Interesting Corner rankings (Dallas had 2 of the worst last year)

Some more interesting stuff from Football Outsiders.
Dallas Cowboys
Biggest Post-Draft Weakness: Safety
It would be nice if Dallas could add a runner to replace DeMarco Murray, but it's clear that you don't need a dominant running back to win a championship in today's NFL. You do, however, need great play from your defense—or at least better play than what the Cowboys got last year, when their defense finished 22nd against the run, the pass, and overall by Football Outsiders' DVOA metric. The additions of free agent Greg Hardy (pending his suspension) and second-round draftee Randy Gregory should boost the pass rush, while first-round cornerback Byron Jones will help Brandon Carr and Orlando Scandrick handle spread formations. At safety, though, the Cowboys are stuck with the eminently mediocre duo of J.J. Wilcox and Barry Church.
Safeties are hard to analyze statistically, because their assignments can vary wildly from team to team. By and large, though, we can say they are asked to prevent opposing offenses from making big plays, and the Cowboys' pair didn't offer much help there, especially in the running game. Church was 25th among safeties in run stops (tackles that stopped an offense from gaining 45 percent of yards to go on first down, 60 percent on second, and 100 percent on third or fourth); Wilcox was 61st. That would be fine if their conservative play was taking away home runs, but Dallas gave up 1.03 Open-Field Yards per carry last year, third-worst in the league. (Open-Field Yards are rushing yards gained at least 10 yards beyond the line of scrimmage.) The Cowboys also struggled to stop deep passes, ranking 20th in pass coverage on throws that traveled at least 16 yards past the line of scrimmage.
And Yikes both our starting safeties ranked high in broken tackles given up.

yeah, our safeties suck. it's by far our biggest problem on defense.going into this offseason, I'd argue that safety was a bigger problem then corner for us. but it is easier to find solid corners then it is to find solid safety. The good news is, assuming Jones is a corner I don't think any other unit on our defense is a weakness anymore. Only safety.

Watch those rankings magically improve this year.
Of course they will improve. I completely expect most of our defensive rankings to improve. If a pass rush didn't improve a pass defense then no one would bother rushing the passer at all. Plus we have a first round pick in the secondary to boost that area as well.

Edge pass rush is secondary to power and push up the middle which Dallas seriously lacks.

Ty Crawford is a good player and Terrell McClain is solid enough when he decides to show up, but where's the beef? Hayden is bad. Bishop is likely also a JAG.

No wonder they are working Mincy and Hardy inside.

The greatest DE's of all time would find their pass rush wasted when QB's have room to step up. No pressure up the middle is no pressure at all-- especially vs the NFL's best QBs.

The defense's edge rush and CB talent improved I guess, but anyone who thinks loss of Melton from an already average interior is insignificant would be mistaken.

Dallas is flat out weak at the worst possible place.

Long term, we are in a situation where Ty Crawford of all people has us over a barrel in negotiating power.

Still worried about the run-stopping. I don't think we fixed that near as much as the pass rush.
No I think Hardy helps with the run defense. I think Sean Lee coming back combined with McClain in his second year here could help the run defense. I agree, I would have liked to see us do more here. Which really translates to improve over Hayden but we didn't.

Why Dallas had two of the worst? No pass rush.

We also lost Melton, who definitely made an impact when he played. DT is very weak right now.

I think Crawford is better then Melton but we are definitely missing that depth. And rotating a DE with Crawford may help the pass rush but it could ultimately hurt our run defense some. I agree, we are razor thin at DT even if you're ok with the starters.

I don't know if I agree with that.

Obviously you need both.

Feel like you're being a bit overdramatic this offseason.

Crawford is definitely better given Melton's injury history, but I think with both of them and McClain we were fine at 3-technique last year. Now removing Melton from the mix makes us weaker and also emphasizes our weakness at 1-technique too. When McClain and Hayden are on the field, we will be fielding one of the weakest tandems in the league.

Gotta do something. It's the offseason.
