Wouldn't it be similar for a high priced contract player, whether resigned or free agent? Who cares about sunk draft pick once selected -- who cares about sunk money once signed?

If you draft a bust, you lament about who you didn't and could've gotten. Same with a Brandon Carr or Miles Austin contract.
That doesn't make any sense. The draft pick is a one time cost. The money spent still has an impact on the cap and how much money can be spent going forward.

Draft pick isn't a one time cost. If you drafted a shitty CB (Claiborne) you still need to spend more resources to accomplish what the draft pick couldn't.

Case in point, we just spent another #1 on CB, preventing us from addressing other positions. Secondly, the failure of a high draft pick may force the need the engage in the while exercise of signing a high priced free agent.

Semantics. It's still a one time cost. Teams are always spending draft picks on positions that they aren't happy with the production they're getting. And it's certainly nothing like comparing the size of a contract and it's ramifications to a draft pick.

Agreed. Responding to lt fan that draft position doesn't matter. What you lost is probably more important than what you got

People don't remember what Sam Bowie did, but remember what was lost by his selection.

Agreed, we're only human, but the team still needs to keep both a level head and their draft picks as long as they qualify for a spot on the 53.

Unlike free agents, draft picks are cheap.

No one ever gets pissed at Houston for picking the wrong hall of fame player.

I think if Bowie had been on even a couple of All-Star teams instead of an injury-plagued backup it may have been forgiven. It's that hard to take even the best guard over a legit big man.

Because they didn't, Jordan played on way better teams, Akeem was dominant in his own right he should be right there in the greatest of all time discussions.

No one ever lets seven footers into that discussion. If Kareem Abdul Jabbar can't get any love, Olajuwon can't either.
