Michael Irvin wants to be a resource to Randy Gregory

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 12, 2015, 5:53 PM EDT

Cowboys second-round draft pick Randy Gregory is a talented football player with some off-field problems. Michael Irvin knows just where he’s coming from.

Irvin, the Hall of Fame Cowboys receiver who had his share of off-field problems, says he has already begun developing a relationship with Gregory in the hopes that Gregory will avoid the same mistakes Irvin made.

“I try to build relationships with all the guys and say I’m here as a resource. You want to give them some help,” Irvin told the Star-Telegram. “I’m a firm believer that the game of football saves lives. It saved my life. There is no telling where these guys would end up.”

Irvin, who has had multiple arrests and was suspended for five games in 1996, said players like Gregory can learn from him.

“Guys seem more comfortable talking to a guy who had situations himself,” Irvin said. “There is no indictment from me. I had my problems. Randy knows I’m saying it from the right place. The kid has been sincere. But imagine what it is going to be like when you are on top again. You can be an inspiration for millions of kids who made mistakes. They can say ‘Randy did it. I can too.’”

Gregory said he’s glad Irvin reached out to him. The Cowboys will be thrilled if Gregory becomes half the player Irvin was.

Just as long as Irvin is over his little Demarco Murray hissy fit.

Imagine how quickly Gregory would get after QBs if he snorted some coke out of a hooker's ass crack first.
