Jerry Jones: I'd consider trading Cowboys' 2016 first-round pick

The ink isn't even dry on La'el Collins' contract, but the speculation continues on the Dallas Cowboys' 2015 prospects.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones called in to 105.3 FM The Fan on Friday morning to discuss the addition of Collins to his offensive line. But the line of questioning took an interesting turn regarding the future.

By signing Collins, Dallas added a third player with first-round talent to their roster this week. The Cowboys drafted Byron Jones with the No. 27 overall pick last Thursday, and they landed Randy Gregory at pick No. 60 after he slid out of the first round.

With a surplus of first-round talent in 2015, Jones was asked if he'd consider trading away his 2016 first-rounder to acquire even more talent -- perhaps for a running back, or maybe further help on defense.

"I'd be reluctant to, but certainly if the right situation came along that could improve us now, with where we are with Romo, his career and where we are with what we've put together, it's a good time to go for it," Jones said.

Collins is widely expected to contend for a starting job on the offensive line this season, which would essentially give the Cowboys four first-round talents to block for Romo and the running game. Byron Jones and Gregory should also contribute to a defense that also added controversial Pro Bowl defensive end Greg Hardy.

There's no shortage of thinking that an additional playmaker could put the Cowboys over the top in their pursuit of a Super Bowl this year. Though, despite his speculation Jerry Jones pointed out the drawback of dealing future picks. He's done it twice before -- in trades to acquire wide receivers Joey Galloway and Roy Williams, respectively -- and it didn't quite pan out.

"It's a bitter pill to swallow. I've done that two times, and I'm telling you, that hurts bad the next draft day," he said.

I'd rather trade the 2016 first round pick for some teams top pick in 2017. Franchise QB needs to be our top priority.

IMO, he's saying this now in an attempt to get the Vikings' attention.

You've had a blue banner offseason so far, Jer.

Don't fuck it up, now.

We are a week 1 missed blitz pickup away from being able to draft the next franchise QB. Don't be dumb.

No shit.

But you have to think, right now, he's considering Collins as an extra first round pick.

So instead of taking the fortune, he will push the envelope and think about throwing the chips in.

No way, no how, do I trade a first, no matter what, for a 30 year old RB. I wouldn't have done it for a 30 year old Emmitt, why do it for Peterson?

Right. I'm not as down on the RBs we have as some are, and think we'll be ok there. Would I like to be better there? Sure. And Peterson would certainly be better. But to trade that kind of scratch for an aging RB is insane. That first rounder next year could be a chip to use in going up for our future QB. Or, our future stud RB to pair with our Oline might be there at our pick.

If the Vikes will take a 4th rounder and maybe a vet player? Sure trade for him. I'll shit myself with glee if that happens. I might even be willing to go with a conditional 3rd. But only because Peterson has been special. HOF special. Normally, to trade for an old RB is a no no. A 30 year old RB? Coming off a year long layoff? Heeeellllll nah.

Why trade for a 30 year old Peterson and get 1-2 good years out of him when we can draft Ezekiel Elliott in 2016 and get 10?

What blows my mind are people that think that if Dallas did acquire Peterson that the other 31 teams would just forfeit the season.

Like getting him would be the Reggie Hammond Quart of Blood technique:

There are effective running backs who are suddenly competing with highly drafted rookies you could target for a song, like Ike Crowell, Terrance West, CJ Anderson, Ronnie Hillman, or Brandon Oliver.

Hell, Knowshon Moreno is still a free agent. Chris Johnson even.

And with 18 RB's drafted, who knows what free agents will hit the market. Basically it is a buyers market.

The only player worth trading the 1st for is Muhammad Wilkerson, and you do that in a half-second.

If the Texans had taken Gordon, I'm sure they wouldve taken a 4th for Foster who is a perfect fit for our system.

He's had issues staying healthy, but he can still play and had a really good season last year.

You can never get too amped up about this team as long as Jerry is around.

Hey we got a first rounder for free, now let's possibly do irrational stuff with next years first.

Pops can talk all he wants. I don't think there's a chance we make a dumb move like that just after we have the least "Jerry" offseason in 20 years.
It's what he does that matters. He talked McClain into coming back to football, talked Collin into 3 years in Dallas. This feels much more like the 90s with Jerry wheeling and dealing and professionals making personnel decisions. Best of all, Jerry gets to be executive of the year, without any weird fight for who gets the credit.

back to back least "Jerry" offseasons in years. Jerry is useful in his current role as smoke blower. No one knows what they are going to do because Jerry is saying whatever comes to mind then not necessarily doing it.

Smoke blower and recruiter/deal closer. Those roles suit him.

I think he is the biggest reason why La'el Collins is here. The man is still a great salesmen. Whatever role Jerry is playing right now is the perfect role in my opinion.

I think you might be right overall, and are definitely right about Collins. Poor kid didn't stand a chance.

Maybe this team finally has the kind of structure it really needs. Maybe Mo Claiborne trades and Brandon Carr bank-breaking deals are now things of the past.

But those very things happened only a mere three years ago, with the same people supposedly running the show.

The headline says< "I'd Consider....."

The first 3 words of Jerry's answer says, "I'd be reluctant...."

But it gets clicks and advertisers pay better for more clicks.
