Texans waive D.J. Swearinger

On Monday morning, safety D.J. Swearinger went on Instagram to say goodbye to the city of Houston and announce that it is time for a “new chapter” of his career.

When asked about Swearinger’s farewell to the team and the city by John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, coach Bill O’Brien said that Swearinger was still a member of the team and replied “it’s a free country” when asked why Swearinger would be saying his goodbyes. According to McClain and several other reporters, O’Brien can be a little more forthcoming when next asked about the safety because he has been waived off of the Houston roster.

If there’s anything surprising about the move, it’s that the Texans weren’t able to find anyone willing to give up even a conditional draft pick for Swearinger in a trade two years after making him the 57th pick in the draft. The team had reportedly been shopping Swearinger in recent weeks.

It’s much less surprising that one of General Manager Rick Smith’s selections from that year failed to pan out because the team has now parted ways with the four players they took in the second, third and fourth rounds of that year’s draft.

Swearinger is available for any team that wants to claim him on waivers and take on the final two years of his rookie contract.

Jeff Heath is a our third safety and we literally have no one else on the roster other then undrafted free agents. So yeah, I'd take Swearinger or any other guy who won't completely shit himself the second he sees the field.

Not sure how much his contract has to do with Romo's. It's not even in the same realm as Romo's in terms of money but he also isn't in the same realm in terms of production either.

Just goes to show you how desperate teams are for QB talent. Guy shows a moderate level of competence, gets a huge contract.
