Even with cornerback pick, Mo Claiborne still part of Cowboys' plans

Todd Archer, ESPN Dallas Cowboys reporter

IRVING, Texas – In 2012, the Dallas Cowboys traded up to the sixth pick to take Morris Claiborne. He had the highest grade given to a cornerback by the team since Deion Sanders, and team leaders were excited.

The same excitement was heard in the voices of owner Jerry Jones, executive vice president Stephen Jones and head coach Jason Garrett on Thursday when they took another cornerback, Byron Jones, with the 27th pick in the first round.

Truth be told, if Claiborne had met the expectations set for him in 2012, the Cowboys would not have selected Jones in 2015.

But Claiborne has not met the expectations. He has three interceptions in his career. He played in just four games last year before suffering a torn patella tendon that will likely keep him off the field until training camp begins.

Stephen Jones said a decision has not been finalized on whether or not to pick up the fifth-year option on Claiborne’s deal. However, the $11.08 million cost and his level of play in his first three seasons say otherwise.

Yet the Cowboys aren’t ready to close the door on Claiborne.

“He’s a pretty good cornerback when he’s healthy,” Stephen Jones said. “Better than a lot of people play with.”

Health has played a large part in Claiborne’s lack of development. He was drafted with a surgically-repaired wrist. He has yet to take part in a full training camp in three years because of injuries. He missed six games in 2013 with a hamstring injury.

“I would characterize Mo’s progress as really good,” Stephen Jones said.

But he also added he was not sure Claiborne would be ready for the start of training camp. In addition to the patella repair, he had a scope on his other knee.

“We still think Mo can be a major contributor this year,” Stephen Jones said.

Do we have to make a decision on his fifth year option soon?
I don't think so. I don't think it has to be done until closer to the end of this next season.

I was curious because all these NFL teams are exercising the fifth year option on their players from that draft already.

The fifth-year option was put into place alongside the rookie wage scale when the CBA was renegotiated in 2011. Per the agreement, first-round picks have a fifth-year option built into the standard four-year rookie contract, and teams can exercise the option after the player's third season.

Still want to know the damn deadline.

All of the ones that I have seen exercised have been on players that are no-brainers to extend with that option.

notice not one mention of brandon carr :lol
I think he is gone for sure. When he refused to take a pay cut he put the Cowboys on a direct course for this draft pick. You can't play like shit and then expect to keep getting paid like an elite corner.

Except Robert Griffin. At 16,000,000.00 you would have thought they would wait longer if they could.

Yeah, but you knew the Skins would extend him, cause, well, they are the Skins.

And the hits just keep on coming. Because of RG3 they passed on Leonard Williams in favor of the best OL of a weak class. Like we did when we passed Watt for Tyron Smith. Smith has been incredible (especially last year), but Watt has the makings of an NFL all-timer.

It's not like we knew that Watt would be THAT good. Tyron was a better pick than Scherff.

He's very consistent, could play 15+ years considering how young he is now.
I think he is still getting better is the scary part. He was a college RT with tremendous athleticism but was somewhat raw (Why he was even available at our pick). The dude is still only 24 years old. It's crazy to think about really. There are guys in this draft older then Tyron Smith, it's no wonder that he is still getting better as a player.

Reminds me of when we drafted 25 year old, non-Mormon rookie Terrence Newman

That's stupid. Nobody knew what Watt would be, or he would have went 1 overall. And Smith was an elite prospect and a spot where we had a huge need. It's not like we reached for somebody we didn't need.

Not only that, but our AARP QB has been exceptional in his latter years. I give Tyron tremendous credit for Romo's longevity.

No one knew Tyron would become the NFL's best either. At the time though Watt was a better prospect than Tyron who was a projected LT from RT and was a bit undersized.

Bottom line was Dallas was desperate for OL help in any form so he had to be our pick.
