A review of the draft grades the Dallas Cowboys have received so far for their first-round pick.

Grading a draft a mere hours after after the last pick is generally frowned on by the more hardcore football fan who knows that drafts can't really be graded until three to four years after the fact. But like the site of an accident, many people also find it hard not to look once such a grade is published.

If the review is good, you cling to it and hope that it will carry over onto the field when the season starts. If it is bad, you can simply shrug it off and say it doesn't matter anyway and post-draft grades are for the weak-of-mind.

Regardless, what the grades do is - to some extent - they capture the general feeling about a draft immediately after it is over. In this post, we'll look at seven writers who have submitted their grades for the Cowboys already (and we'll update the post with more grades as they become available).

Here's how the Cowboys' grades compare to the Rest of the NFC East:

I'm not seeing the charts at the bottom.

That's not saying much.

Washington passed on the best player in the draft for an OG.
The Giants drafted the 2nd-3rd best OT in the draft even though they had the pick of the litter.
Philly drafted a WR literally one round too soon.
We drafted a useless, injury prone workout warrior.

All of our picks stunk.

Most are giving our first round pick an A(-) type grade. I've said my peace about my doubts about Byron Jones skill set but the experts seem to think the tape looks really good. I know we all want to say workout warrior but everything I've read basically says he was every teams sleeper until he ran great at the combine. Then the cat was out of the bag and everyone went back and saw that he was a pretty damn good corner. Again, personally I don't see the instincts with him.

I thought Claiborne was going to be an excellent corner. I wasn't that high on Patrick Peterson. So clearly I don't know my head from my asshole when it comes to judging college corners. I'll default to the people who actually have film to watch on Byron Jones because I've only seen a handfull of plays that were on the internet.

At least he won't be a complete dumbass like Claiborne. I also like he's a high character guy. I still think not re-signing Moore is about a stupid a decision as we've made lately.

I liked Moore but for some reason our coaches didn't like him. The Patriots didn't seem to like him too much either. I don't know if he is just a dickbag or what but something about the guy must be wrong.

Yeah, at the end of the day Mcclay and the personnel department has made some savvy moves. I have no reason to not give them the benefit of the doubt

People can't prop up McClay and company for the good draft last year, then come in here and vomit up all the shit you *think* you know about Jones as a CB. I trust McClay saw something in the kid, or he wouldn't be a Cowboy.

I like the guys athleticism, then again I'm in the contracting biz, not the scouting biz.

I think we needed a DL vs a CB, but obviously the Cowboys think differently.

Pretty much. The Cowboys FO have shown over the last 3-4 years that they just might know what they're doing in the draft. Certainly better than they did 5+ years ago. Just because we might not like a pick doesn't hold much water. I think they've earned a little bit of the benefit of the doubt.

Taking a CB is fine if he's legitimately talented.

What's upsetting is the rapid climb seemingly based on those freakish combine results and a home-track advantage 4.36 40 time.

Hell, Claiborne ran 4.37 on his home field track and we all know he's nowhere near that fast on a football field.

NFL.com didn't have Jones ranked in their top 100.

Well if we want to talk workout it wasn't just his jump and 40 time. At the combine he also posted elite shuttle times and 3 cone drill times. Among corners he had the fastest 60 yard shuttle, 3rd fastest 20 yard shuttle and 3rd fastest 3 cone drill. I don't think you can really question Byron Jones workout numbers. (Also had the highest and longest jumps for corners obviously)

I just wonder if those things translate to the field. The few clips I have seen make me question his instincts. But that's such a small percentage of total plays over his career. Plus I thought Claiborne had amazing instincts from his videos and look how wrong we were about that.

Obviously, none of these pundits are local to this forum. This pick was roundly panned here.

Many seem to apply the Mike Mamula label to Byron Jones. Im not so sure that's valid.
