Cowboys CB Orlando Scandrick looking to build on strong performance in 2012 season

IRVING — The cornerback who performed at the highest level for the Dallas Cowboys last season wasn’t Brandon Carr. Nor was it Morris Claiborne or Mike Jenkins. It was Orlando Scandrick, according to ProFootballFocus.com.

The sixth-year veteran, who play has been roundly criticized in the past as an overpaid defender, fared well in 2012. Of the 28 passes thrown his direction, he allowed only 39.3 percent of them to be completed.

And while he went a full season without making an interception for the first time since his rookie campaign, another website, STATS LLC, shows that 513 players were burned at a higher rate than was Scandrick, who is generally assigned to cover an inside receiver. That’s why Scandrick said he was so disappointed when he fractured his left hand last November and missed the final five games.

“It’s always been sort of mental with me,” Scandrick said earlier this week. “I feel like I have great athletic ability. I am fast. I am strong. I am smart. But it’s always mental. It’s a mind thing with me. I want to take last year and build on the things that I did well and I want to improve on the things I didn’t do as well.”

But in order to accomplish that goal, Scandrick will first have to master Monte Kiffin’s 4-3 scheme. That shouldn’t be a problem for a cornerback who has played under five defensive coordinators since entering the NFL in 2008. Upon being reminded of the turnover that has happened above him, Scandrick smiled.

“I can’t control that. I can only worry about the things I can control,” he said.

And right now Scandrick is focused on the challenge of learning a new system.

“I am really looking forward to this year,” he said. “This is going to be a very special year for us if we go out and perform to our potential.”

In Scandrick’s case, that means duplicating or exceeding what he did in 2012.

He's a good player. I hope Webb makes his contract expendable, but we are better when Scandrick is on the field as of right now.
