Romo: I Would Have Been Willing To Take A Pay Cut To Keep DeMarco

by Glenn Erby | Posted on Tuesday, March 31st, 2015

Now he says it!

Tony Romo said the subject never came up at length, but he would have been willing to take a pay cut to keep DeMarco Murray. Romo spoke at length to “The Ben & Skin Show” of 105.3 The Fan as part of an offseason interview on Tuesday afternoon.

“DeMarco ended up asking me, he was like ‘Why don’t you take a pay cut,’” Romo said. “I was like ‘I will! I would take a pay cut to go do this.’”
Romo is far and away the Cowboys’ most expensive player, with an average salary of $18 million and a 2015 salary cap hit of $27 million – nearly 20 percent of the team’s salary cap for the year. The veteran quarterback, who will turn 35 next month, said he and Murray joked about the topic during the lead up to free agency.

“I was like ‘They’re going to restructure,’ and that’s the same thing in some ways – for salary cap purposes. He was like ‘Ok, now we’re back to being friends again,’” Romo said. “I was like ‘You’re really Dworried about me? I would take $5 million less if it meant getting you back,’ and he knew that. It was just funny how he was worried about that part of it for like a week, and I’m like ‘That’s not the reason. Obviously, I’ll restructure. I would even take a pay cut.’”

By restructuring the contract, Dallas could have converted most of Romo’s 2015 salary into a signing bonus, effectively reducing his cap hit to just $1 million and pushing the largest cost into the future.

Dont see the point now. Just bite the bullet now and ease the future cap now since Murray is gone.

That's kind of messed up. You don't F with another guys money. Especially if it's only so you can get more.

Romo wouldn't have taken a pay cut, nor should he. Eff Murray even more for asking.

Brady is a far superior QB and is taking less than market value in order to win as his years start to dwindle, if Romo is serious about winning a title he should take a pay cut so the team can put more around him.

I'm glad he didn't. Murray isn't worth the contract he got, period. If he manages to produce at that level again, Chip bought a winning lottery ticket. Every metric and every bit of history says his production should drop by at least 30% and he'll likely be injured.

Brady didn't take a pay cut. He restructured.

He should absolutely take a cut for Dez though. Dez is half the reason Romo has had such an absurd stat line for the last 4 years.

Brady signed a 5 year deal averaging 12 a year only 2 years ago, that is way below market value, even if it's basically all guaranteed money.

Brady has always taken less per year for the team.

Maybe one of the reasons he has 4 rings and Romo has stats.

Propaganda. Brady looks like he's taking less money but his guaranteed cash has always been top tier. The Pats have just been shrewd, guaranteeing a larger % of his contract knowing he's a good investment in order to keep the total number down. That has everything to do with the Pats FO and nothing to do with Brady being a saint.

Romo got about 50 million guaranteed while Brady got about 60, difference is that Romo also got about another 60 million on the deal, maybe he only sees 30-40 of it but still. Do you think Romo would have taken an annual number of 12, as opposed to about 20, for only about 10 million more guaranteed?

Nope.

Romo has already gotten more than 60 guaranteed with the restructures anyway on this deal. Luckily he deserves it more than schlubs like Flacco and Manning who won titles on the back of their supporting cast and then signed deals that destroyed said supporting cast, but the point remains that if Romo wants to win it all in the limited time that he has left, he should take a pay cut.

Wow.

I already thought Murray handled that entire process poorly, but he also had the nerve to ask Romo to take a cut?

What a bitch.

Even if Romo did take a pay cut, they weren't giving that money to Murray. They took a hardline stance on their price for him and didn't budge, even when they had wiggle room.

F Murray.

When finding out Romo wasn't going to be restructured, Murray was all...

As I said before, Murray can take his injury prone, fumbling butt to Philly and implode for all I care.

I'm sure if Jerry asked Romo to take a "pay cut" to keep a good player (namely Dez), Romo would jump on board.
