Suh is a better player, that's what you're referring to.

Hardy fits a position that is a bigger need. That's pass rushing DE. We at least have an interior guy with some rushing ability in Crawford. Which is basically the spot Suh would play in our defense. Now Suh is obviously a huge upgrade but that's not the point. We have no DE currently who is capable of sniffing 10 sacks. Our best hope on the current roster is Lawrence. He looked good in the playoffs but I'm certainly not going to jump the gun on him just yet. He still had 0 regular season sacks last year.
Don't be dissing my boy DLaw :)

I think the positional need is conventional thinking and too simplistic. Recall that Hardy went from being good to a total animal after Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short joined the Panthers-- it's no coincidence. Numbers are bullshit, for the most part. We don't need 15 sacks from an LDE. We need a consistent defense.

Suh more than another other single player could have made every team we face 1-dimensional, like the Colts were in Dallas.

With Suh playing nose tackle/1 technique, the QB has a hard time stepping up to escape pressure. This makes Lawrence and Mincy (or whoever the LDE ends up being) better players. But it also makes Sean Lee and the entire secondary MUCH better.

A 1-dimensional team could have the greatest passing game on the planet, but they can't keep the defense honest and the QB can't step up to escape pressure, so they can't compete against a balanced offense like Dallas.

I actually really like DLaw. Lets face it though, you create pressure from the DE spot. It's too easy to double team a guy up the middle. It's not nearly as easy to double team a DE who can basically line up as wide as you want him. DT's are very important but it is a position that is far easier to neutralize when passing the ball then a DE is. It's why DE's get all the sacks in the NFL.

On an even playing field you take Suh over Hardy. I agree. But when you factor in cost and need, Hardy makes a lot more sense.

I don't want to get ahead of myself but Crawford (25) Lawrence (22) Greg Hardy (26) sets up for a pretty studly young D-line. Really just leaves the 1 technique spot prime for an upgrade. With all that youth you could get away with going the veteran route then on someone older.

Too bad. Durant was classically decent when healthy.

The Cowboys in 2008 led the league in sacks, and we saw where exactly that got us.

DE's get the actual sacks, but they can attribute a large percentage of those sacks to internal pressure. One guy, by not only drawing that double team but also pushing forward anyways makes both DE's and the 3 technique better pass rushers.

Imagine if 25% of a DE's sacks come as a result of internal pressure and 35% of a 3-technique's sacks come as a result of the 1-technique plowing forward through a double-team exactly how big a help that one guy is to your sack total.

Bigger than this is how 1-dimensional he makes the other team. They often can't run effectively or at all. This is bigger than any pass rush. Knowing a pass is coming is half the battle, as Aaron Rodgers' empty backfielding ass found out most of the way through the 3rd quarter vs Seattle.

I think it's safe to say that Detroit had a top 5 defense because of this one guy. Calvin Johnson's contract took away any chance to keep him-- what a blunder.

And until this past year their defense was pathetic even with Suh.

He had a great year, that's for sure. Maybe it was a contract push and he's going to mail it in from here on.

Anyways, here's to getting Greg Hardy, though I'll believe it when I see it.

I don't think Suh will mail it in. I think he is a legit stud. I'm just hoping we can get Hardy for half the price.

If the prices were the same you take Suh. I don't think there is anyone out there who would disagree with that.

Get me Eddie Goldman in the draft and we might have one of the best D-Lines in 2 years...

Goldman is basically a nose tackle. Sorry, want a little more explosion. He reminds me a lot of Jernigan.

I really only think we need McClain. I think your 3 starters are set then. You can kind of wait until the draft and see if you can add a player or two as depth. After that you can probably sign some left over free agents if necessary.

Agree, with Marinelli he also wants the 1-tech to be able to get push up the field quickly.

And then there is this:

All I know is he made everybody else look much better.
Of course I'd rather have Shelton, but no way he drops that far, maybe Brown, buty I'm not sure I prefer him, if they are both there I trust Rod.
I don't like Phillips, Armstead or Davis' attitude.

I'll say this, I think you're wrong about us not signing anyone. I'm just afraid we will sign multiple 3 mil a year guy types and get no real impact. Instead of getting one real impact player.

Cromartie was on First Take yesterday saying he likes his fit in Dallas (Actually said he was the Cowboys missing piece and then he started comparing himself to Deion :jerk ). But I wouldn't mind him in the $3M - $3.5M he played for Arizona last year. Would help with some of the CB concerns.
