Jets Expected To Sign James Carpenter

March 10th at 9:18am CST by Dallas Robinson

9:18am: Carpenter will sign a four-year contract with the Jets worth in the ballpark of $4.75MM per season, a source tells Rand Getlin of Yahoo! Sports (Twitter link).

TUESDAY, 6:49am: Although Middlekauf backtracked a little on his own report overnight, tweeting that he was “premature” and that talks with Carpenter are still ongoing, Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports has also reported (via Twitter) that the Jets will sign the offensive lineman. So barring a last minute change of plans on either side, it should get done.

MONDAY, 11:14pm: With interior offensive line help near the top of their offseason to-do list, the Jets have made a move to aid their front five, agreeing to terms with guard James Carpenter, according to John Middlekauf of 95.7 The Game (Twitter link). The transaction can be made official when the new league year begins tomorrow.

Carpenter, who will turn 26 later this month, was selected by the Seahawks in the first round of the 2011 draft, and has spent the past four years in Seattle. The Seahawks declined Carpenter’s fifth-year option, allowing him to hit free agency a year earlier than many other first-round draftees. Drafted as a tackle, Carpenter has settled in at guard, but he hasn’t been very effective, rating as the league’s No. 65 guard among 81 qualifiers in 2014, per Pro Football Focus (subscription required).

The Jets had reportedly been hotly pursuing Mike Iupati, who was considered the top free agent guard on the market, but the former Niner reportedly agreed to terms with the Cardinals earlier today. Orlando Franklin, another reported target for New York, appears headed to San Diego, leaving the Jets to shift their focus second-tier alternatives.

While Carpenter may not be quite as reliable or effective a presence in the middle a a veteran like Iupati and Franklin would be, he shouldn’t be nearly as expensive either, though financial terms of the tentative agreement aren’t yet known.

Wilfork is considering it as well. Pagano is a former head recruiter at the U.

Makes the non-tender of Moore look even worse. He is not that much different in terms of talent.

That would be a nice pickup.

Andre to the Colts would create an interesting reaction around these parts.

Colts To Sign Trent Cole

March 10th at 11:17am CST by Zach Links

The Colts will sign pass rusher Trent Cole, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Cole, 32, was released by the Eagles earlier this month.

Cole, 32, was been a fixture on the Eagles’ defense since being selected by the club in the fifth round of the 2005 draft. During his 10 years in Philadelphia, Cole has played 155 games (145 starts), racking up 85.5 sacks, 569 tackles, and 19 forced fumbles. After posting six consecutive seasons with eight or more sacks from 2006 to 2011, Cole’s production has fallen off in recent years — he has just 17.5 sacks since 2012.

The advance metrics at Pro Football Focus (subscription required) Cole still ranked as the 19th best outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme in 2014. That’s not as favorable as, say, his No. 7 ranking in 2013, but Cole has shown that he is still very productive.

As the Colts appear set to sign Frank Gore and possibly steal Andre Johnson away from the Eagles as well, they probably shouldn’t expect a Christmas card from Chip Kelly this year.

Andre has been a great player but he is definitely at the end of his career. I guess he is young compared to Reggie Wayne.

He isn't a dominant receiver anymore but he still plays well when he's on the field.

He can help a team, and I would imagine he will certainly do well with Andrew Luck.

Yep, they really need to work on the O-line in the draft. There offense would be unstoppable if they had even a respectable offensive line. Watching Luck half the time I don't know how he does it. Their O-line can't pass block or run block for shit.

Yeah color me unimpressed. 4.1 YPC and 391 yards rushing.

He is just a receiver who the Patriots lined up at RB.

He's a nice compliment to Jennings and has shown he can carry the load if/when Jennings gets hurt.
Vereen is a really nice addition. Eli has lacked a RB he can throw to and that is Vereen's strength.

How so? The most carries he had in a game last year was 11. Hell Joseph Randle basically had just as many yards rushing last year as Vereen. I guess you can say I don't get the Vereen love.
