Cowboys won't tender Sterling Moore

March, 7, 2015

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Despite their need at cornerback, the Dallas Cowboys will not tender Sterling Moore a contract as a restricted free agent, allowing him to sign elsewhere.

Moore played in every game in 2014, starting seven and solidifying the cornerback spot when Orlando Scandrick was suspended for the first two games and when Morris Claiborne was lost for the season in the fourth game with a knee injury.

He did not intercept a pass but he led the Cowboys in pass deflections with 14. The coaches credited him with 49 tackles.

While Moore will become an unrestricted free agent, the Cowboys will give the low tender to running back Lance Dunbar and punter Chris Jones worth $1.542 million. Because Dunbar and Jones were undrafted free agents, the Cowboys would not receive compensation if they sign with the other team, but the tender is not guaranteed.

Dunbar has been the Cowboys third-down back the past two years, catching 18 passes for 217 yards and picking up 99 yards on 29 carries in 2014. Jones averaged 45.4 yards per punt with a 39.8 yard net average. He had one punt blocked for a touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks.

At cornerback, the Cowboys want Brandon Carr to take a paycut from his $8 million base salary and are not sure Claiborne will be ready to play by training camp.

The Cowboys’ fourth restricted free agent, wide receiver Cole Beasley, signed a four-year deal worth $13.6 million last Wednesday to stay with the team.

So they tender wastes like Dunbar and Jones but not Moore?

Effing retards.

Yeah I can't say I get this one. I probably would have been happy if Dunbar signed somewhere else. I just hope we still bring back Moore on the cheap.

Dunbar still really pisses me off.

This one truly surprised me. Of course contracts these days aren't about the total value any more. It's about the fully guaranteed money and the money over the first 3 years. Maybe Stephen isn't sure where to put the numbers for those two areas. Might be he wants to see what the market will bear and then make his pitch based on that.

Might be he has a "wink wink" agreement to match what the market is willing to give. I can't believe that they are simply willing to let him walk without a thought.

But it's risky to do it that way.

Surprised he was not tendered...Patmon has to step up now and Carr has to take a pay cut or we are pretty much having to pour resources into CB.

Moore is the type of low cost option we should be embracing at CB. How do you look at our situations with Claiborne and Carr, and not at least tender him?

Maybe they think since they got away with stashing him on the PS they can get away with not protecting him now? Hell, I don't know, just trying to make sense of it.

I couldn't agree more. We waste so much money at the corner position and I really don't think our coaches understand the secondary at all. Our best corner is Scandrick and yet all of our resources were used on Carr and Claiborne (High draft pick, high salary).

I love Marinelli as my defensive coordinator and I have a lot of faith in his front 7 ability. I'm not sure he really understands or cares about the secondary enough though. Same goes for Garrett. I think he'd rather keep a toy that he doesn't use on offense (Dunbar) then to keep a valuable 3rd/4th corner.

Cowboys hope to re-sign Sterling Moore despite not tendering him

The Cowboys need more depth at cornerback, but they aren’t willing to tender cornerback Sterling Moore as a restricted free agent. Therefore, he will become an unrestricted free agent at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The Cowboys, though, are interested in bringing back Moore for the right price, according to a source. Moore was in line for $1.542 million deal if the Cowboys tendered him an offer.

Moore, 25, played in every game last season, including seven starts. He had 14 pass deflections and was credited with 49 tackles by the coaches last season.

Moore, an SMU product, joined the Cowboys in the middle of the 2012 season and played five games that season and five more in 2013.

The Cowboys have more decisions to make at cornerback, too, beginning with Brandon Carr. They will try to talk Carr into taking a pay cut as he is scheduled to make $8 million in base salary and count $12.2 million against the salary cap.

And Morris Claiborne remains a question mark with injury and performance concerns. He continues to rehab from a knee injury and might not be ready by training camp.

That leaves Orlando Scandrick as the only known quantity at cornerback for the Cowboys going into 2015.

The Cowboys will tender offers to running back Lance Dunbar and punter Chris Jones for the $1.542 million price, but will not receive compensation should they sign with an other team as they were undrafted free agents.

Dunbar is viewed as a respectable change-of-pace back, although he is coming off an underwhelming season. He had 99 rushing yards on 29 carries.

Jones, meanwhile, averaged 45.4 yards a punt. The Cowboys have also signed an Australian punter, Tom Hornsey, to compete for the job.

Yeah I have no idea why he did not get a tender but if they get no compensation the tender does not really matter.

It is the right to match a contract offer. But yeah, if we still plan on trying to bring him back it isn't a big deal. $1.5 million doesn't seem out of line for Moore though to be honest

Maybe they just don't think he's good enough.

I just don't think we'll be able to sign him for less than his tender.
