Cowboys free-agent needs: Defensive tackle

March, 4, 2015

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

With free agency starting March 10, it is time to break down the Dallas Cowboys' needs and wants. Teams can start talking with players on Saturday.

Defensive tackle

What they have: Terrell McClain ($1 million base salary), Tyrone Crawford($675,000), Josh Brent ($745,000), Amobi Okoye ($745,000), Chris Whaley($510,000), Ken Bishop ($510,000), Davon Coleman ($510,000).

The position: The Cowboys have two free agents in Henry Melton, who had five sacks last season, and Nick Hayden, who led the defensive line in tackles last season, ready to hit the free-agent market. Of the two, Hayden is the more likely to return.

In a way the Cowboys lucked into finding out Crawford’s best position was at the three technique. He spent most of the offseason and training camp at defensive end but moved inside early in the regular season and flourished. He had three sacks and 29 quarterback hurries, which are numbers that should go up the more he gets accustomed to playing the position.

He played defensive end in a 3-4 as a rookie, missed the 2013 season with a torn Achilles and had to adjust to a new spot in 2014.

The nose tackle position is important for the Cowboys, but not at the cost of a first-round pick (see Sharrif Floyd from a couple of years ago) and not for major dollars, especially if that player offers nothing as a pass-rusher. In the Cowboys system, they want the one technique to occupy space and play on running downs. Whatever they can get in the passing game is a bonus.

McClain’s first year with the Cowboys was slowed because of ankle injuries. He can play the nose spot but also has some position flexibility. Brent is the biggest tackle they have but has to work his way into the game after his off-field issues cost him roughly two seasons. Bishop was a seventh-round pick last year and played well in the playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Best available: Ndamukong Suh. While there are dreams that the Cowboys will make a play for Suh, they are too far-fetched. The Cowboys will not have the money to compete to sign Suh. He might be the best free agent to hit the market since Reggie White and can change the game, but the cost is just too high for Dallas. But it won’t stop a team from signing him to a deal that might be the largest for a defensive player in NFL history.

Best Cowboys fit: Stephen Paea’s ties to Rod Marinelli in Chicago make him a natural target but it will all come down to cost. Paea had six sacks last season, which would have tied for the Cowboys lead, and is not the run stopper the Cowboys might want. For that another player with Marinelli ties, Cory Redding, could be a fit on a one-year deal.

What they will do: The analytics folks won’t like it, but the Cowboys will re-sign Hayden while using the draft to find a bigger body on the inside to pair up with Brent, Bishop and McClain.

Cowboys free-agent needs: Running back

March, 6, 2015

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

With free agency starting Tuesday, it is time to break down the Dallas Cowboys' needs and wants. Teams can start talking with players on Saturday.

Running back

What they have: Joseph Randle ($585,000 base salary), Ryan Williams ($585,000).

The position: Running back is a huge need, especially with DeMarco Murray set to hit the market in a matter of days. It would be stunning if the Cowboys and the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year strike a deal at this point.

Randle showed some real ability last year and there are those at Valley Ranch who believe he is a 1,000-yard rusher. But then his off-field problems must be factored in and there’s a question as to whether he will be with the team going forward depending on how his legal troubles in Wichita, Kansas, play out. Williams spent the year on the practice squad and the Cowboys rewarded him with a $240,000 signing bonus after he chose to pass on other offers to sign with other teams last season.

But he is hardly a proven runner, and he has injury worries as well.

Lance Dunbar could be nontendered as a restricted free agent, and fullback Tyler Clutts is also set to be an unrestricted free agent.

While many believe in the premise that running backs can be found anywhere and everywhere, the Cowboys quite literally might have to do that with only two of them on their roster at this point.

Best available: Murray. There are some quality runners available in free agency, but none of them match up to Murray. You don't run for 1,845 yards on accident. Now, can you expect a repeat of that season? No, and it's not fair to do so.

Best Cowboys fit: Murray. That the Cowboys have let it get to this point is surprising. If they really wanted to keep Murray, they would have done so by now. Murray provides the best fit for the scheme, for the offense and for the locker room. If he doesn’t return, then Mark Ingramwould be the next best fit. Jason Garrett was a huge fan of his when he entered the league, and he just spent a week coaching him at the Pro Bowl.

What they will do: If they don’t re-sign Murray, then the Cowboys can play the rest of the market going through guys like C.J. Spiller, Ingram or Ryan Mathews all the while knowing the draft is deep with runners this spring and they can get to the third or fourth round and find a guy to plug in and play. Will it be the same production as Murray? Will he have the same impact statistically and emotionally? Doubtful.

I think he would be a 6 to 8 sack guy playing a full year, He practiced fully over the last 6 weeks of the season so I don't know where that comes from.

I think he is now a Marinelli guy so don't be surprised to see him back.
How many sacks would he get going on IR before week 6?

I wouldn't be surprised to see him back either. The problem is that should really be a last resort move. I fear that they will get lazy and do that with better players still available.

You can ask that same question about Orakpo.
The difference is if Orakpo doesn't tear his pectoral again, he's probably a 10 sack guy.

If Spencer stays healthy maybe 6 sacks if we are being really optimistic.

I can agree with this logic I just don't see Orakpo buying into being a rotation guy while trying to get a new contract.

I don't think Orakpo is a good enough player to mess with the Chemistry.

Would rather sign Spencer on the Cheap and go after a healthier younger guy with more upside.

Orakpo 23 games missed the last 3 years.

Spencer 19 games missed in his career.

Do some research yourself.
Spencer might as well have missed all of our regular season games for all the good he did.

Spencer: 34 career sacks in 8 years

Orakpo: 40 sacks in 6 years.

How's that for research?

I don't know about that. He has already come out and said Dallas is one of the teams with money being equal that he'd want to play for. If he is healthy he'd get starters snaps. Plus it'd give us 3 legit DEs to rotate.

Or your love of him. There's not a single objective reason to keep an old guy with destroyed knees who wasn't productive on the team.
I don't love him I Just think he could be a cheap valuable veteran piece, nothing more nothing less.

The fact that your hyperbole about his "knees" is so over the top is very telling.

I di not know he said that, interesting.

I am not totally against bringing Orakpo in but it should definitely be at a team friendly rate.

I'll take my chances on the younger and more productive Orakpo, but even then, it would have to be a low-risk investment with the idea that we still need to be throwing some quality bodies at the position.

Ex-Redskins LB and ‘Texas boy’ Brian Orakpo wouldn’t mind joining Cowboys

Jon Machota

For players entering free agency, it’s similar to when they were entering the draft. It’s uncommon to hear anyone say they don’t want to play for a certain team. They have more value when more teams are involved.

Veteran edge rusher Brian Orakpo has played his entire six-year career in Washington.

But as a free agent, the former Texas Longhorn All-American wouldn’t rule out a future with the Cowboys.

“I wouldn’t mind it, I wouldn’t mind it,” Orakpo said Friday on NFL Network. “I mean, I know it’s been a big rivalry for years, but I’m a Texas boy, man, so I wouldn’t mind it.”

Orakpo, a Houston native, has been playing outside linebacker in Washington’s 3-4 scheme. For the Cowboys, the three-time Pro Bowler would play defensive end, the position he played in college.

When asked where he’d want to play if money wasn’t part of the equation, Orakpo responded: “It would either have to be one of the Texas teams, since I’m from Texas, obviously, or I love playing for the Redskins.”

Orakpo, 28, had one of his best years in 2013, recording 10 sacks and 60 tackles, however, multiple pectoral injuries caused him to miss most of the 2012 and 2014 seasons.

The Cowboys have made it known that they won’t be breaking the bank in free agency. If Orakpo has plans of going to the highest bidder, it probably won’t be Dallas.

Sure his knees will be fine, right after Tony Tolbert's.
