That's because most things conservative are common sense and right in terms of governing. Most of which is antithetical to much of what the left proposes or implements. I hope they have much more governing in mind than just repealing Obama care as well, but that abortion of a law needs to go. Unfortunately, they still don't have the power to get rid of it without Dem help. And the way they passed it they aren't likely to help get rid of it. Tax reform had better be tops on their list but we'll c.

And I didn't say they weren't biased read what I wrote.

Conservatives aren't common sense, they're the voice of status quo. Liberals are the voice of change. This is why progressives were the main proponents of prohibition, because they wanted to "fix" alcoholism when conservatives weren't willing to give up the nation's 5th largest industry. Flash forward 100 years liberals want to legalize pot for recreational use, and conservatives are afraid of the implications of the change.

I think it's based on age mostly, young people are restless and miserable and want a change for the sake of change, older people have families to think about and mortgages to pay and don't want anyone rocking the boat. I feel that people who are more economically mobile (not necessarily higher earners, but have more disposable income) tend to be more liberal. I think that's one of the reasons women tend to break left more often than men, women tend to have less obligation as providers than men, so they're less worried about the economy tanking or something of that nature.

I would disagree about higher earners being more liberal. My experience is that successful business people tend to be more conservtive

You get a lot of left leaners at the very top though. Warren Buffet, Bloomberg, the guys with billions stacked on billions. Most of your successful business people need to continue to be successful business people and don't want anything to threaten their business. It's only those at the very top and the Hollywood crowd that don't have to worry about the economy going south because of a new tax structure or whatever.

Yep. Those individuals are a minority however. Tbier assets are stashed in trusts and for the most part and they have complete control of their holdings. The represent a minor part of the business world however even though they are multibillionaires.

I specifically said not necessarily higher earners. I mean the people less dependent upon immediate income to keep their head above water. Even high earners can have huge mortgages, kids in college (who're plenty liberal thanks to being taken care of), alimony and God knows what eating their income.

Yep. You also get lawyers (who benefit from more government) and academics (who work for the government and don't live in the real world).

The problem I have with conservatives is that they lie about caring about individual freedom. They really don't. In the 80s and early 90s gun control was being driven by conservatives. They are for absolutely any spying on the American people that the government wants to do for "national security", they are retardedly stubborn on the marijuana issue to the extent that the Drug Cartels need to start contributing to the Republican party, they want to outlaw homosexuals and ban birth control (or at least Rick Santorum does).

All in all, I'm not impressed by their vision of a fascist version of America where their "values" are enforced at gunpoint.

I'd say I agree with them on government spending but they want to raise spending just as much as the democrats, they just want to pretend it's spent on the military.

I always find it really disappointing when the Republicans insist on putting things like Birth Control, abortion and gay marriage at the front of their arguments. These are losing arguments on things that won't be changed. Why the hell push the agenda at all. Just focus on the economy and smaller government. That's where the Republicans could absolutely dominate and should dominate. Less spending and a smaller government would go a really long way to long term economic success and that's what people really care about. I don't give a shit about birth control and most people don't. What they care about is the 40% of their pay check disappearing and the lack of customers at their business because no one has any money to spend.

I think you are generalizing too much. I am a conservative person and i could care less abot guns and all that nonsense tied to conservate people. Most of my friends ard conseratives and they are as individual on their personal preferences as anyone else.

I've never seen Republicans vote for actual smaller government on the federal level. They talk about smaller government and less spending, then they sign things like the Patriot Act into law and take us on decade-long military excursions.

Well, I'm talking about the "conservative" politicians that end up in Washington. I don't know your views or your friends, so I can only judge the "conservatives" that actually run for office.

Well the military spending does get out of control but we have seen Republican's focus on tax cuts before which is ultimately smaller government.

What I'd really love to see is entitlement reform. Pretty soon that will become nearly impossible as the people who receive entitlements will outnumber the people who don't. That's the type of smaller government we really need though.

Republicans bitch about welfare on one side then turn around and hand out bailouts to companies that should have to file for bankruptcy and be reorganized.

They aren't really against entitlements, they just have different ideas about who should get them.

Corporate bailouts are almost without exception repaid and the program saves jobs that benefit the economy as opposed to welfare programs that contributes nothing to the economy. That is the difference in a conservative versus a liberal view of economics just to name one point.

I think anyone who describes democrats as liberal or republicans as conservative is greatly overreaching. Politicians all like to expand government and increase spending. Dems and Reps only disagree on how it should grow and where we should spend.

But the fact remains that, at least in your view, the government can actively influence the economy in a positive way, which is counter to conservatism (classical liberalism).

Sometimes I suspect you guys are just annoyed by poor people getting assistance. I don't mean that as a slam. It's just a product of the modern Republican party's counter-class-warfare. The left wing started the have v. have-nots thing.

I realize the bailout thing was started by Bush and I wasn't in favor of it then. I do not now an have never believed in too big to fail. It may be wrong minded of me, but there is a difference between a loan like Chrysler got and a bailout like AIG got and some of the others got. Am I correct or mis-informed?

A bailout and a loan are essentially the same thing. One is a formal request for assistance and the other is deemed a neccessary action because of the implications. The too big to fail ideology is a theory that says the domino effect of the failure would jepordize the economic well being of the entire country.
