Three things we learned at combine: Cowboys

February, 19, 2015

INDIANAPOLIS -- Observed and heard at the NFL combine on Thursday:

Getting to work: Tony Romo has had two of his better seasons in 2013 and 2014 despite not being able to take part in the last two offseason programs, organized team activities or minicamps because of back surgeries. In the last two seasons Romo has 65 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.

Romo tore ligaments in his left ring finger in the playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers, but coach Jason Garrett said that is healing fine and will not be an issue this offseason.

"The first time in a couple of years that he's been able to go through the offseason program, I think that will really help him," Garrett said. "He's worked very hard to come back from some injuries that he's had and handled himself really well once the season started to play as much football as he has coming of those injuries. But I think he's going to feel better having that foundation that everybody else gets by going through an offseason program."

Cowboys coaches popular: The Cowboys lost their offensive coordinator in Bill Callahan early in the offseason but they were able to keep their defensive coordinator in Rod Marinelli.

Callahan joined the Washington Redskins as offensive line coach and he said he passed up chances to be a coordinator elsewhere. Redskins coach Jay Gruden has ties to Callahan through his brother, Jay.

"I think he's one of the best at what he does," Gruden said. "It's very well documented. His offensive lines have been very dominant, very physical, and that's why we were looking to get him."

Marinelli was linked to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers moments after the playoff loss to the Packers, but he later said he didn't talk with Lovie Smith and didn't want to leave the Cowboys.

"What I wanted for Rod was for Rod to be happy, and he's been happy," said Smith, a Texas native. "He's embraced the Dallas Cowboys and the tradition behind them. So I enjoyed my time I worked with Rod other places, but I'm OK with him being with my second favorite team."

Waiting game: The Cowboys are looking into the arrest of Joseph Randle with the NFL but are withholding comment until the investigation by the Wichita, Kansas, police is complete.

Randle had drug charges dropped from a Feb. 3 incident at a hotel involving an ex-girlfriend. Dalia Jacobs requested a protective order from Randle, saying he smashed a car window and had a gun after they had an argument. Randle's attorney has denied the charges.

It is possible Randle could be subject to a six-game suspension under the NFL's new personal conduct policy.
