Mike Mayock: Kentucky DE Bud Dupree would make sense for the Cowboys

With the Cowboys badly needing help rushing the passer, selecting a defensive end with their first-round pick seems like a realistic possibility.

Well, if they go in that direction, who would be a quality compliment to their 2014 second-round pick, DeMarcus Lawrence?

NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock says Kentucky defensive end/outside linebacker Bud Dupree could be that guy.

“At the end of the first round, I think Dante Fowler, Randy Gregory and Shane Ray will all be gone,” Mayock said during a Monday conference call. “There’s potential of Vic Beasley from Clemson and Bud Dupree from Kentucky to be there. Dupree is very interesting because he’s 30-plus pounds bigger than Beasley. He has the ability to set a more physical edge than Beasley and is a nice pass-rush compliment. Bud Dupree would make some sense there, I believe.”

The problem is most mock drafts are projecting Dupree to be gone by the time the Cowboys are on the clock at No. 27. Could they trade up in the first round? Sure. But it would be very costly. Remember, Dallas had to send its second and third-round picks to Washington just to move up 13 spots to land Lawrence early in the second round.

Mayock ranks Dupree as his fifth-best edge rusher in this class. The four players ahead of him are Fowler from Florida, Nebraska’s Gregory, Ray from Missouri and Beasley.

Finding a quality edge rusher in the draft is difficult. As Mayock pointed out, they have to have the toughness and size to set the edge and rush the quarterback against offensive linemen that are more skilled and stronger than what they faced in college.

“If you look at the edge guys, going back to 2011, 2011 was a great year,” Mayock said. “Aldon Smith, J.J. Watt, Robert Quinn, Justin Houston, Von Miller. [In] 2012, not so much. Maybe Chandler Jones, maybe Quinton Coples, that’s it.

“[In] 2013, Ziggy Ansah and look at the other first-round picks: Dion Jordan, Barkevious Mingo, Bjoern Werner, Jarvis Jones. That’s maybe one for five in 2013.

“Last year, look, [Khalil] Mack had a heck of a year, the [fifth-round] pick, [Aaron] Lynch had a good year, but the jury is out on [Jadeveon] Clowney, Dee Ford, Marcus Smith and DeMarcus Lawrence. So it’s a hard evaluation.”

Rob Rang has Dupree going 13th to the Saints.

Guy will be long gone unless he smokes some crack before draft day.

Mayock is going on a limb thinking that Gregory, Ray, and Fowler will be gone by the end of the first.

That's kind of why he's paid the big bucks.

And Kiper doesn't have him in the first at all. Scouts Inc. doesn't even rate him in their top 32. So I don't know that it is such a slam dunk that Dupree is gone long before our pick.

Scouts Inc. still lists players that aren't even draft eligible. They are complete shit.

Dupree could very well blow up the Combine and suddenly, like a miracle, he pops back into Kiper's first round.

He could, but I wouldn't say it will take crack for him to be available at 27 either.

I don't think it's completely unrealistic that Dupree is there as it would be to think for a guy like Danny Shelton or something but I don't think it's particularly realistic. Overall, I think we should trade down unless someone like Dupree, Goldman or Malcom Brown is there, maybe an Ereck Flowers if we still have a hole at RT, and then target someone like Michael Bennett, Paul Dawson, Eric Kendricks, Nate Orchard, Carl Davis or Odighizuwa.

I'd also be fine taking guys like Bennett, Dawson or Kendricks at 27.

I like Orchard if he is there at 27, don't think you can move down and think he will just be there...not a big fan of Brown, actually like Jordan Phillips better than him.

I have seen some things of La'El Collins being there at 27, I'd take him without hesitation.

Depends on what we do along the OL in free agency, if we have a hole at RT taking Collins there is a no brainer, if we re-sign Free where does he fit?

Sure you could say he's a future starter or whatever, but how can you justify spending a 1st on an OL when we have Smith-Leary-Fred-Martin-Free under contract?

If we re-sign Free we have to make every effort to trade down if someone like Collins is on the board, perhaps even Flowers too.

Umm...if we have a hole at RT I would take Collins. You read way more into it.

Seems a bit crazy to have 4 first round picks on the O-line but I'm not really opposed to it. Part of me worries about the cap but you're not really going to deal with that for a while. Even when that happens these guys won't all hit free agency at the same time, they will sort of be staggered one year after the next. I don't know how much you worry about 5 years from now.

we seem to have better luck selecting guys from big time programs, not basketball schools.
