Reports: Packers considering changes to offensive staff, play calling responsibilities

After the Packers lost to the Seahawks in the NFC Championship game, head coach Mike McCarthy said he was unaware that linebacker*Clay Matthewswas dealing with an injury in the second half of the game because he was focused on calling the plays for the offense.

McCarthy may not have that issue to deal with again in 2015. Chris Havel of WDUZ in Green Bay*is reporting that*the Packers will promote offensive coordinator Tom Clements to associate head coach and give him the play calling responsibilities while also moving Edgar Bennett from wide receivers coach to offensive coordinator.

No other Packers reporters have confirmed that report, but Tyler Dunne and Tom Silverstein of theMilwaukee Journal Sentinel, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com*and Jason Wilde of ESPN Wisconsin all report some variation on the theme of the Packers considering changes to the responsibilities of the offensive staff.

Silverstein reports the goal is greater “team oversight,” something that became a concern when the team “lost its way” in that title game loss to the Seahawks. In the past, McCarthy has said he’s willing to make a change with play calling “if*I felt we would*be better served*to have someone else call the plays.”

The Packers haven’t reached that point in the past, but it sounds like 2015 could bring a new approach on the sideline in Green Bay.

That will be good for them, probably. But the HC is still going to need to grow a pair and go for it on 4th down in situations like that title game if he wants to get back to the SB.

49ers announce 2015 coaching staff

The 49ers coaching staff started changing shortly after the end of their final regular season game with the announcement that Jim Harbaugh would no longer be their head coach.

Those changes continued for several weeks as the 49ers lost their offensive, defensive and special teams coordinators to other jobs while they were hiring Jim Tomsula to replace Harbaugh as the head coach. Those spots and all the rest have now been filled.

“Our staff is a collection of passionate coaches who have wide-ranging experience at every level of the game,” Tomsula said in a statement announcing the entire staff. “This is a group of talented communicators who take great pride in helping players maximize their abilities. Throughout the staff you see bright, high-energy coaches who enjoy taking a hands-on approach to teaching the game. We are all looking forward to getting to work.”

Offensive coordinator Geep Chryst and defensive coordinator Eric Mangini were both on the 49ers staff in 2014 in different jobs while running backs coach Tom Rathman, defensive assistant Ejiro Evero and offensive assistant D.J. Boldin stay in the same roles. Ronald Curry will return and coach wide receivers along with Adam Henry while Mick Lombardi will move from an offensive to a defensive assistant role.

The new arrivals, most of which have been previously reported, are special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey, tight ends coach Tony Sparano, offensive line coach Chris Foerster, quarterbacks coach Steve Logan, assistant offensive line coach Eric Wolford, defensive line coach Scott Brown, linebackers coach Clancy Pendergast, secondary coach Tim Lewis, senior defensive assistant/linebackers coach Jason Tarver, defensive assistant Aubrayo Franklin and assistant special team coach Richard Hightower.

The Broncos brought Wade Phillips back to Denver to run their defense this year and Phillips said he’s a better fit running the defense than he was in the last job he held with the team.

Phillips went 16-16 and made the playoffs once as the Broncos head coach in 1993 and 1994, one of the six times he’s served as a head coach on an interim or permanent basis for an NFL team. This will be his eighth stint as a defensive coordinator and Phillips said Tuesday that he thinks he’s a better fit in that job.

“I was a lousy head coach, but I am a pretty good defensive coordinator,” Phillips said, via Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

Phillips actually has an 82-64 record as a head coach and he’s led teams to the playoffs in five of his eight full seasons in the job. That’s not all that lousy, although the latter half of his self-assessment impacts the Broncos much more.

Phillips thinks he’ll have plenty to work with in Denver. He called it “a better situation than I have ever come into” and confirmed that he’ll run the 3-4 base defense he’s utilized throughout his “pretty good” career as a coordinator.

That's one thing about a Wade Phillips defense, it will get sacks at all costs. The problem is it is usually at the cost of sound coverage and offenses eventually figure this out.

It's not at the cost of sound coverage as much as it's at the cost of turnovers. He sends pressure and goes all out to prevent big plays with soft coverage so his teams are usually near the bottom in interceptions.
