Who's calling the plays? It's still undecided

IRVING, Texas -- Coach Jason Garrett said the Cowboys are still working on the mechanics of who'll call the offensive plays during the 2013 season.

It's an interesting discussion given how this has turned into a bigger deal than it should be. Garrett has called plays since arriving here from the Miami Dolphins in 2007.

After last season, owner/general manager Jerry Jones said changes were needed to the offensive structure and he was leaving those decisions to Garrett.

Garrett was asked Tuesday to explain why it still hasn't been finalized.

"I think we have a pretty good plan, and we'll execute it as the offseason progresses," Garrett said.

Offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Bill Callahan seems like the perfect candidate because of his experience, but it seems nobody is saying the job is his. Quarterback Tony Romo has also been given more input and, while it's not expected he'll call plays himself, his influence will be felt.

The wild card is quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson, who has a strong relationship with Garrett and Romo. Wilson could be telling Romo the plays through his headset on game days.

But who actually calls the plays themselves? That's another story.

"Whatever coach wants me to do, whatever role he wants me to fill, I'm more than happy to do that," Callahan said. "We're working through a lot of things right now. ...

"When that play goes in, they're all types of options that we build into the play itself. They can be checks with me, they can be packaged with another run, run-to-run, pass-to-pass. A lot of that (goes) on when the play goes in. You have to, from the people that I've spoken with around the NFL. There's a lot of teams that use that mechanism, use that procedure. That's one way of doing it."

What a dumbfuck organization this is.
They know damn good and well who is going to call them and it probably is going to be Garrett again.

I don't know why they are being all coy about it.

There is no way he's going to turn over his coaching future to Callahan to call the plays if he is as smart as he is supposed to be.

Does any other organization in football have reams of articles printed about who'll be calling the goddamned plays? This was an issue when Parcells was here too. Everyone was on Parcells for being too conservative and when Chris Palmer joined there were discussions about who's calling the plays in Dallas.

Even Parcells didn't how to respond to that.

Only the f'ing Cowboys get this kind of ridiculous over-examination.

I have no doubt that Garrett will do the majority of the play-calling, I just think this whole dog and pony show about it is ridiculous.

It is ridiculous.

Why the hell can't they just say who it'll be?

To steal a line from Parcells, "What is this? The Cuban missile crisis?"

Sheesh.

Yeah, happened with Parcells here too. Not the end of the world. It would be nice to have a real chain of command, but we don't.

Wouldn't it be great if we had a head coach who was communicating and in touch with all 3 phases throughout the game?

Garrett will never grow as a coach until he learns to coach the whole team. Leaving him with control of the offense will only lead to more over-thinking and stubbornness. When he is running the whole ship he'll appreciate how running the ball more can help his defense. It seems so far as a HC that he's out of touch or afraid to have any in-game input with the defense. Is it because he's preoccupied with offense, or has Jerry told him what his duties are?

Either way, I don't think he'll ever be a decent HC if he can't engage the entire team. Silly to hope for change, though, when the owner is calling the shots.
