Jerome Bettis making it is a joke.

As an aside, Thomas Davis's acceptance speech for man of the year was really good. I wish more athletes shared his way of thinking.

Bettis getting in ahead of Pace is retarded, but I'm really happy that the voters finally pulled their heads out of their asses and let Haley in.

Shields and Seau are the only two I am sure about; have always been an advocate for Tim Brown, and glad he got in; Haley is a tough call; I think there were better candidates this year. As for the others, Meh.

I'm on the fence about Bettis. He is like top 5-8 or something in all time rushing yards and I think he's the only one in the top ten that wasn't in the HOF but he was pretty average during the latter half of his career. I agree that he shouldn't have been in there before Pace.

Watters? I don't know. He did have a more consistent career than Bettis and was much more productive as a receiver. He has a ring as well but it was earlier in his career. Look at it this way: Watters finishes his career with a mediocre Seahags team. Bettis ends his as a SB champion and it's looked at and considered by many as the culmination/reward of the career of a long, mostly productive veteran.

Eh. I'm just happy Haley made it in and I hope he goes in as a Cowboy.

Me personally, I'd take Roger Craig over Bettis; and I would definitely take Jimmy over Wolf, Polian or heaven forbid Dungy.

I think Craig and Watters were more talented and diverse than Bettis but sometimes it comes down to career timing. Watters and Craig were both key to their teams winning titles but their careers afterward ended with no accolades. Bettis closed his out on a high note despite not being a huge contributing factor. His best years added up to nothing but stats but Watters and Craig were key players in their SB runs, Bettis was a bit player in that Steelers SB win. If Bettis doesn't win a ring in the twilight of his career, I doubt he gets in.

Jimmy should be in, period. I don't even care about speculation over who was the "Big Dawg" in the 90s. That team was not the same after he left and that is indisputable. That team was still on Jimmy cruise control when they won after the '95 season and it's been mostly downhill ever since.

He won't. Probably as a 49er.

Haley long overdue.

Bettis in is a joke. 3.9 ypc is a hall of famer now? I guess if you're a Steeler it is.

Too much emphasis is placed on him being #6 on the career rushing leader list. He played at a Top 10 back level for a long time - props to that - but only had maybe 3 seasons as a top 3 back

why hey not Drew Bledsoe then? He's like #11 on the yards passing list. He had more of a direct impact on his Super Bowl win by beating the Steelers after Brady got injured in that playoff game.

It it does a disservice to players who played 2-3 less seasons, but at a higher level for more seasons like Tiki Barber and Ricky Watters.

You our are essentially saying that 3-4 seasons of sub-1000 yards strengthens your HOF case as a stat compiler. Great - I'm sure people applaud Emmitt for doing that in Arizona.

He might, but it's not about stats so much in Bettis' case but the inspiring way he ran. Having a cool nickname and personality helps too, while Watters was a dick.

"For who? For what?"

That will stick with him forever.

Yep, the nickname, amiable personality, and leading Pitt to a SB win all worked in his favor. Otherwise, like Biggio in baseball, he's a "compiler."

I guess Hines Ward should start getting his acceptance speech ready

Him, Rapistberger, Polamalu are all locks. Being a Steeler means you get in even if it's a maybe. Kevin Greene would be in by now if he had stayed in Pitt instead of going to Carolina.

Polamalu, Harrison, and yeah, probably Rapist are deserving. On top of being an intimidating force, Harrison had the greatest defensive play in Superbowl history. Both he and Polamalu were the best at their position for years.

Even then without the Rapist they don't come close in 2008.

Harrison was the best at his position for like 2 years. He had only 3 seasons with 10 or more sacks, never led the league in sacks, only finished with 71. His numbers don't get him in and his reputation as a dirty player will hurt him with a lot of the voters too.

IMO, he wasn't as good as Lloyd, Gildon or Porter.
