Steve Smith and Derrick Mason were also small WRs that were drafted mainly for their return skills at first.
It's pick 27. Who are you getting there anyway? 2nd tier linemen and WRs, 1st tier DBs and RBs.Well hell, if we are talking about using a first round pick then I'd sure as hell rather resign Murray. Of course I don't think there is any need to use a first round pick on a RB or invest big money in Murray. And just to clarify I really like Murray and I really like Gordon.
I'd rather take a second tier lineman or 1st tier WR or CB before a RB.It's pick 27. Who are you getting there anyway? 2nd tier linemen and WRs, 1st tier DBs and RBs.
Just because the facts say there have been several 1st round bust RBs lately doesn't mean you shouldn't ever draft one.No one takes franchise RBs in the first round. Taking a RB there is a luxury pick. A luxury the Cowboys can't afford to take when there is still so much work to be done on the defense. The facts support my stance by far on this fact.
And yet Morris has had a better career to this point then Eddie Lacey without the benefit of an elite passing unit like Lacey. Just kind of goes to show you that even your "shinning star" example isn't that good. The real money area for RBs appears to be the third round with guys like Murray and Charles being third round picks. With this being an especially deep draft at RB, I think we should be fine with our third rounder on someone like David Johnson, Ameer Abdullah, TJ Yeldon or David Cobb.Dallas picks at the bottom of the 2nd, so they would need Eddie Lacy luck to land a premiere back there.
Alfred Morris, a 6th round pick, has steadily declined along with his gimmick offense and he can't catch worth a damn.
I could see Yeldon turning into a Leveon Bell type easily, I could see him doing some very good things behind this line. And yet Morris has had a better career to this point then Eddie Lacey without the benefit of an elite passing unit like Lacey. If Murray goes, it is no longer a luxury pick.I'd rather take a second tier lineman or 1st tier WR or CB before a RB.

I have a hard time seeing a cornerback at 27 that will be considered best player available. Thank goodness. It all depends on who is available at 27. I can see us likely going RB in round 2 or 3. But if our top DL targets are gone and Melvin Gordon is sitting there at 27 it'd be hard to pass on him. Otherwise we'd probably move on to the next DL or *gasp* CB.
Same here. That would be optimal, but I think Orchard has vaulted himself way way up, a lot like Donald did last year. He killed it this past week as he eliminated a lot of concerns whether or not he could be a down lineman. As a fan, if we were to take Gordon I would be very happy. It is exciting to get a new skill position guy like a RB, WR, QB, etc.
Now the team builder side of me wants a DE/DT. I think for us to get the impactful DL we need we are going to have to take one in the first round. I like the RB depth much better this year than the DL depth. Say you go Orchard, Carl Davis, RB in the first 3 rounds. I think I would jerk it clean off.
It depends on how big of a need the Cowboys are going to see CB though. But with the success of the OL and the talk from Stephen that they are going to give the DL the the "OL treatment" I can only hope they stick with that. And with the players on the board, I think going DL this year would be a win-win, filling a need and getting BPA at the same time. CB would just be filling a need, or trying to.I have a hard time seeing a cornerback at 27 that will be considered best player available. Thank goodness.
Lots of players really helped themselves...Nate Orchard, David Cobb, David Johnson, Ameer Abdullah, Carl Davis, Steven Nelson off the top of my head.Same here. That would be optimal, but I think Orchard has vaulted himself way way up, a lot like Donald did last year. If GB actually ran Lacy I know we'd see more, but they are pass-happy fools. Lacy looks a bit out of shape, but he is physical and fast. And yet Morris has had a better career to this point then Eddie Lacey without the benefit of an elite passing unit like Lacey. Then I guess this should be the greatest RB draft of all time. We're set!I could see Yeldon turning into a Leveon Bell type easily, I could see him doing some very good things behind this line.
And Ravids obsession with Lacy is crazy, I can see 5 backs better than him easily in this draft.
And when Lacey becomes a free agent I doubt he will be getting a huge contract either. Hell no free agent RBs are getting huge contracts. It's all about supply and demand. The supply of talented NFL RBs is extremely high and the demand for NFL RBs is low in today's pass happy NFL. This means the price on RBs is low. Price can come in the form of contract size or in the form of actual investment AKA draft picks. That's why taking a RB in the first would be overpaying, regardless of what is on our roster currently. If we are really that concerned about Randle and Williams then we need to just franchise Murray and move on.If GB actually ran Lacy I know we'd see more, but they are pass-happy fools. I think signing Murray will lock us into the guys we have which basically puts everything on a guy with too much tread on his tires. A medium-priced free agent plus a draft pick will get us to where we need to be.If we are really that concerned about Randle and Williams then we need to just franchise Murray and move on.
I like David Johnson just as much if not more. Cobb has the big school advantage, so if we want a replacement back, we can get one.I am afraid Cobb may have pushed himself into the 3rd...although I hate to get hung up on a range for a player. If I think he can be a starter at RB, using a 3rd on him is a no-brainer.
Abdullah showed well, but he is going to be a niche guy...he is not a starter IMO.I like David Johnson just as much if not more. Cobb has the big school advantage, so if we want a replacement back, we can get one.
I disagree completely. I think he has all the ability to be a McCoy type back, my only concern with him is fumbling. It was a bit of an issue during his career. The guy may be short but he runs with tremendous balance which allows him to break tackles and not get thrown around like a rag doll.Abdullah showed well, but he is going to be a niche guy...he is not a starter IMO.
