So Williams is not an ex-bust?
Exactly.

Williams isn't a has-been, he's a never-was and Randle is a JAG with a little ability whose production can easily be reproduced by an average player.

If you're willing to carry those guys on the roster, why not take a chance on a former top 10 pick who actually did do some good in this league before he went to Indy?

It's one thing to count on the guy to start, but just asking him to compete for a backup role? Why the hell not?

No to Trent. He's been a bust for two teams now and appears to be a headcase too.

Nope.

What do we risk on a cheap ass 1 year deal and an opportunity to see him in camp? If he sucks, he doesn't make the roster.

No harm, no foul.

But it's cheap, low-risk high reward moves like this that can help form championship rosters. Make him battle it out with Randle and Williams for the the 2nd back on the team and see how he does.

I don't see the harm in that for a former 1st rounder who had a good rookie campaign.
Dallas doesnt need cheap they need continued added quality to the roster. The team is too close to start taking shortcuts.

They are good backups.

Look at Trent's average per carry over his career. He has always sucked. People got suckered in by some TD numbers for some reason. He was never good in this league. Not sure why Randle still gets dogged so much. He looked very good last year and he has a solid frame now. I think he is listed at 6'0" 210 lbs. Not saying I want to make him a feature back but everyone seems to feel like they need to make him sound like shit to prop up a different RB in the NFL who can't average 4 YPC.

Randle was good this year and cheap. If that is a JAG then sign me up for that kind of production from more backups labeled JAGs.

I don't dog Randle and I value what he brought and even wanted him to get more carries down the stretch, but I think he's average and you can find plenty of guys who can do what he did in his limited role.

That's all I'm saying.

Trent Richardson

3.6
3.4
2.9
3.3

Those are the numbers I care about. I don't even get to the point of questioning if he is a headcase or not. Behind our O-line he might break the 4 YPC mark but talk about a guy who leaves yards on the field.

And you know Williams is a good backup how?

Did I miss when he came in a played well for us this season?
I don't know what Ryan Williams is but I do know he had injury problems which kept him from ever reaching his potential and he looked good the times I did see him here in Dallas. I'd also be drafting a back and going from there to see what I have.

I just think we know the story on Richardson and Ingram, and I think we can do better with a draft pick. Williams is a shot in the dark cause we get a free look, not my plan A.

Its also where personnell are evaluated.
And, to be fair, the level of competition is not comparable to that of Sundays from September through
January

I liked the Williams signing and I think he has ability. I'd like to see him get more work, actually.

But seeing an inexperienced backup player perform well in the preseason is not a guarantee that he's going to be a solid NFL backup, and that was the point I was trying to make to L.T.

Jerruh's got two words for ya - Rolando.McClain

Now, everything's salvageable. Just need to know what Hostile clocked his 40 at.

Well in all fairness, he is coming out of a decade-long retirement and switching positions.
lol Age doesn't matter with this guy. The batman eye makeup gives him extra juice running between the tackles.

Seriously though, Murray made huge plays for the Cowboys in 2014 and you can't ignore them by labeling him injury-prone or a fumbler.

I don't think we can overpay, but if we dump him then we need to be prepared to draft a RB in the 1st round because that's what it will take to even give us a chance at replacing what Murray did for Dallas this year.

Dallas went 12-4 with average defensive talent largely because DeMarco Murray was a threat to destroy the defense on almost every play. That ripple effect to the rest of the offense is huge.

Without Murray, Dallas struggles to go 8-8... again, maybe worse because Romo probably has to pass so much he probably goes down.

Basically if we want any chance of building on what we had this season we need a star running back in the backfield.

We are talking about backups. They are evaluated in the preseason usually because the starters are determined already in training camp. Preseason competition is the system for thinning out the back up prospects.
