Doug Marrone leaving Bills

Posted by Mike Wilkening on December 31, 2014, 6:15 PM EST

Another NFL head coaching job has come open.

Bills coach Doug Marrone has opted out of his contract with the club, team owner Terry Pegula announced Wednesday afternoon.

“Doug Marrone informed me late today that he has decided to exercise the option clause in his contract and relinquish his responsibilities as our head coach,” Pegula said in a team-issued statement this afternoon.

Continued Pegula: “We are disappointed that Coach Marrone will no longer be an important part of our organization. We thank him for all of his hard work and leadership during his tenure and wish him and his family the best with the next chapter in their lives.

“We will now begin the important process of conducting a thorough search for a new head coach as we continue to strive to reach our goal of returning to the playoffs and bringing a championship to Buffalo for our fans.”

Marrone had just finished his second season as Bills head coach. Buffalo was 9-7 this season.

He might be on his way to Buffalo to pair up with Bill Polian. Polian also means that ex-backup QB Frank Reich gets a shot at the HC job for the Bills. Should fire up the local yokels.

Marrone apparently is front and center for the Jets job, which doesn't make a ton of sense to me but whatever.

I don't know what DeCosta is waiting on, but he keeps turning down jobs that are pretty much there for the taking.

Maybe he is waiting on Ozzie to die or something.

From @mortreport and I: Doug Marrone walks with his 2015 salary of $4 million without it counting as an offset against any future salary.

:lol ouch

He must have wanted an extension that they didn't want to give, so he took his escape clause.

He did a good enough job getting that team to a form of respectability. He should get some looks.

With firing of Tom Gamble, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman wins power struggle with Chip Kelly
By Mark Eckel | For NJ Advance Media
on December 31, 2014 at 7:31 PM, updated December 31, 2014 at 9:55 PM

Tom Gamble was just a pawn in a chess game, and Wednesday, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman made the final move and declared, "Checkmate!"

Gamble, the Eagles vice president of player personnel with nearly 30 years of NFL experience with the Eagles, Jets, Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers, was fired by Roseman on New Year's Eve.

Don't buy into the "mutual parting of the ways'' that team declared in a statement.

This was a firing.

Why?

Gamble was a pawn in a power struggle between head coach Chip Kelly and Roseman — a struggle that could force Kelly to leave the Eagles.

Shortly after Kelly was hired as head coach in 2013, Kelly brought Gamble aboard. The two go back to when Kelly was the head coach at New Hampshire and Gamble was an East Coast scout. With similar goals, desires and work ethic, they hit it off immediately, and remained close on the West Coast when Kelly became head coach at Oregon and Gamble became the 49ers' director of personnel.

Roseman wasn't supportive of Gamble's hiring. Roseman didn't think another talent evaluator was needed, especially a guy with more experience — not to mention a guy with close ties to the head coach.

During the season, Kelly joined Gamble on scouting trips and the alliance created tension in the front office. Some speculated that Kelly — a popular head coach with a massive contract — and Gamble would team to force out Roseman, and Gamble would be elevated to general manager.

But in a Philly Game of Thrones, it didn't play out that way.

Kelly and Roseman's relationship has had its ups and downs. According to a person with knowledge of the situation who requested anonymity, the two "didn't get along, but had a sitdown (last) summer." Now, according to the same person Kelly "tolerates'' Roseman.

Two years into the Kelly regime — after a first-round exit from the playoffs in 2013 and missing the postseason in 2014 — with Kelly at his weakest, Roseman got his way. Gamble was fired, and Kelly lost his lone ally in a front office, which obviously is ruled by Roseman, whose power now appears unthreatened.

"There is no way Chip Kelly is happy about this,'' said an NFL personnel executive with another team who knows Gamble. "What the (heck) is going on there? How does Tom lose out in that battle? That place is dysfunctional.''

The executive requested anonymity to speak freely about another team.

The team refused comment when contacted by N.J. Advance Media, Kelly was not made available to discuss the firing, and he was not quoted in the team's press release that announced the move.

On Monday, Kelly called Gamble "an outstanding football man'' and said he did a "great job." During that same press conference, Kelly said Roseman was good at handling the salary cap.

According to people inside the organization those quotes "infuriated'' Roseman. The general manager — who has never been a scout, played the game or coached — has worked to overcome the image of being solely a salary-cap guy.

Roseman believes he has earned his job as general manager and the club's top talent evaluator. Instead, his head coach called him a glorified cap guy. Two days later, Roseman, with support from owner Jeffrey Lurie, exacted his revenge.

Now the big question is: What happens next?

Gamble will find another NFL job quickly. It will be a surprise if he doesn't have a job by the Scouting Combine in February.

Gamble isn't the first personnel person Roseman has dumped and probably won't be the last. Gamble joins a list that includes Louis Riddick and Tom Heckert, among others.

In the end, Roseman could end up like the 49ers' brass — a general manager trying to explain why a successful coach abandoned the organization. Because, with Gamble gone, Kelly likely will be more willing to take a call the next time a major college coaching opening occurs.

Howie Roseman is one of the least qualified decision makers in the NFL not carrying the last name Jones.

I guess he is good at gobbling Lurie's cack.

That is the only explanation.

Roseman was the guy leading the "dream team" charge, just in case anyone forgot.

It'll be nice to see Kelly take a college job after 2015.

That's exactly right. Lurie and Roseman are pretty close.

Not mentioned in the article, but Roseman also won a power struggle with Joe Banner a few years ago. Banner was also a friend of Lurie's, so that illustrates just how close Roseman is to the owner.

There is some belief that Roseman had much more influence over the 2013 (considered pretty successful with Lane Johnson, Ertz, Mychael Kendricks) and 2014 was more Kelly (a disaster so far).

But there's no question that disarray in the Eagles power structure is a great thing for us. :towel

Polian’s return to Bills breaks down over money

Posted by Mike Florio on January 1, 2015, 2:34 PM EST

The Bills had expected to see a 2015 return to the franchise from Bill Polian. On Wednesday night, Jason La Canfora of CBS reported unequivocally that Polian “will be taking over as Bills team president/football czar but move may not be announced til late Jan, due to his commitments.”

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, which had been conspicuously (but predictably) silent on the subject Polian’s status, Polian will be staying at ESPN.

“Bill Polian today informed Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula that he will remain as an ESPN NFL analyst and commentator for 2015 and beyond,” Mortensen writes. “Pegula had reached out to Polian in an advisory capacity and eventually gauged his interest to head the team’s front office. That led to further discussions but Polian decided he was content with his current quality of personal and professional life. Pegula was understanding of Polian’s position.”

Not mentioned by Mortensen is the reality that, per a league source, Polian ultimately decided he wanted more money than Pegula was willing to pay. It’s also possible that Polian leveraged the interest into a sweetened deal with ESPN, to remain there “for 2015 and beyond.”

It’s also believed Polian wanted Marrone to remain in place as the head coach. Last month, Polian raved about Marrone, who opted to collect $4 million to walk away.

Polian’s decision not to return to Buffalo now turns the entire plan upside down. Guys who were believed to be in trouble (like CEO Russ Brandon and G.M. Doug Whaley) now may have bought some more time. How much time isn’t known, because the current thinking is that Pegula will feel compelled to make a run at a big-name coach.

Which could mean that Bill Cowher finally will get the major payday that he was never going to get in Pittsburgh.

Nah.

I just think Roseman is a sniveling Smithers-like little shit toady that has Lurie's ear and won't tolerate anyone else around.
