LSU Tigers defensive coordinator John Chavis is headed to the Texas A&M Aggies to take the same position on Kevin Sumlin's coaching staff, a source told ESPN's Brett McMurphy on Wednesday.

The 58-year-old Chavis has been the defensive coordinator under Les Miles at LSU since 2009. He won the Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant coach in 2011.

This season, LSU ranked fourth nationally -- and second in the SEC behind Georgia -- in passing yards allowed, giving up only 162.3 yards per game.

Chavis will replace Mark Snyder, who was relieved of his duties after the regular season. The Aggies allowed an average of 38.3 points and 502.5 yards in their final seven games under Snyder's watch this season.

Under Snyder, the Aggies ranked 103rd nationally in yards allowed per game (449) and 111th in rushing defense (223.5 yards allowed per game).

"They've been very effective," Sumlin said earlier this season of the LSU defense. "They've been athletic, had some different people on the field, they've done a nice job. [Chavis] has done a nice job this year, too.

"John Chavis' record stands for itself defensively, and he's as good as there is in the country."

It's as if they think stitching an SEC patch on their jersey all of a sudden means they're awesome.

That's why the conference irks me. 4 programs are great yet the fans of the other 10 teams are always chiming in as of their teams are great as well.

Back in 2007, I made the roadtrip to Nashville for the UCF/Miss St Liberty Bowl. Miss St had been horrid for years and this was their first real bowl in a long time. Their fans were so thankful to be there and gracious towards us before and after the game.

But the one thing I found funny was how the only thing they seemed to take pride in was being in the SEC. Their band at halftime comes on the field and when most bands start to move and form a logo specific to their school, the Miss St band spells out "SEC". I couldn't help by laugh. For a lot of those schools, it's all they have.

I hate it but I can't say much. I really want to defend my conference but they make it hard.
