DeMarcus Lawrence: It’s time for me to show up

IRVING
Rookie defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence knows he hasn’t made much of an impact yet for a guy drafted 34th overall in last year’s draft.

He has yet to record a sack and has only one tackle for loss in five career games.

“I’m feeling like it’s my time,” Lawrence said. “It’s time for me to show up, time for me to go out there and start making plays.

“I feel like I know the playbook well enough that I should be able to go out there, do my assignments, get after the quarterback or be a run stopper.”

In fairness to Lawrence, it is a small sample size for him so far. He fractured his right foot in training camp and was on the short-term injured reserve the first eight weeks of the season.

He made his debut in Week 9 against Arizona, recording three tackles and one quarterback pressure. He had another pressure against Jacksonville in Week 10, and then a tackle for loss against the Giants in Week 11.

Lawrence recorded only one tackle against the Eagles on Thanksgiving, and then missed the next week’s game at Chicago with a chest injury. He returned last week for the Eagles rematch, but didn’t record any stats in 20 snaps.

It’s been tough for somebody who describes himself as a “sack master” on Twitter to remain patient. Lawrence had 10 1/2 sacks last year as a junior at Boise State, and 9 1/2 as a sophomore.

“I’m very eager to get after the quarterback and get to the ball by all means,” Lawrence said. “But it’s about your fundamentals and doing your assignment at all times.

“Some plays I know I won’t be able to get there, but my ambition and mindset is to get there. So that’s what I’m working on each and every day.”

It seems like just a matter of time, too, for Lawrence to make an impact given what his fellow defensive linemen and coaching staff say about him.

“He’s coming along well,” veteran defensive end Jeremy Mincey said. “He’s going to be a really good player, he’s just got to learn some small details.”

Added coach Jason Garrett: “He’s getting better and better. He’s one of those guys that comes to work every day. He certainly has ability. He’s learning. He’s in a good environment with veteran players around him.

“He just needs to play more and hopefully we’ll give him a chance to do that as the season progresses.”

Didn't he make similar comments over the past few weeks?

It would be nice if Lawrence made an impact on Sunday but I'm not holding my breath.

This would be the time. They will probably not have their starting RT.

To be fair, he'd have a better shot if he got some DE reps in 3rd downs more often.

OXNARD, Calif. — DeMarcus Lawrence has some lofty expectations for his rookie season.

The Dallas Cowboys defensive end says he’s looking for double-digit sacks in his first season.

“My expectation is to go out and get 10 sacks, 10-plus sacks,” Lawrence said. “Whatever coach needs me to do.”

What if they need him to be an impact pass-rusher beginning Week 1?

“Then that’s what I’m going to be,” Lawrence, a second-round pick, responded without hesitation.

Haven't had to say a thing. His play has spoken plenty for itself.

Lawrence and Manziel can both go "show up" with each other in a room someplace and leave us the hell alone.
