Todd McShay's first mock draft has Cowboys taking cornerback
December, 18, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas – ESPN Insider Todd McShay offered up his first mock draft for 2015 on Wednesday and he has the Dallas Cowboys leaning defensively.

Smart move.

With the 25th pick in the first round, McShay had the Cowboys taking Wake Forest cornerback Kevin Johnson. You have to be an Insider to read the full mock, but here is McShay's breakdown:
The Dallas defense held up better this season with the help of a dominant running game and ball-control offense, but corner is still a position of need for the Cowboys. Former first-round pick Morris Claiborne was benched this season prior to his season-ending injury, and the Cowboys could use an infusion of youth and talent at the position. Johnson doesn't have elite physical traits, but he's fast and fluid enough as an athlete to keep up with most receivers and is physical and aggressive as a press corner despite his lean frame and shorter arms. His instincts and awareness are excellent.

When McShay says “doesn’t have elite physical traits,” it makes me want to turn the page a little bit. I’m not going to pretend I know a thing about Johnson at this time. I have a hard enough time keeping up with the players currently on the Cowboys’ roster, let alone players who might never put on the star, in the middle of December.

Cornerback will be a huge need. McShay mentioned Claiborne, who will be entering the final year of his deal and will be coming back from major knee surgery. Brandon Carr’s future is also up in the air because of a $12.717 million salary-cap figure in 2015. The Cowboys won’t keep him at that price and will likely ask him to take a major paycut.

If Carr refuses, then they’ll likely let him go, which adds more to the need of getting a cornerback or three in the offseason.

I wondered earlier in the week whether the Cowboys’ 2015 draft would solely be about the defense. The Cowboys have obvious defensive line needs. George Selvie, Anthony Spencer and Nick Hayden are set to be free agents. As of now, the Cowboys will decline the option on Henry Melton’s contract that would guarantee him another $9 million.

To me, I think defensive line is more of a need. By a smidge. You can have the best cornerbacks in the world, but if the quarterback is not affected, then it won’t much matter. Pressure makes a secondary. A secondary doesn’t make pressure.

Shouldn't be a wonder, at all. We could use help at every defensive position (including LB, if R McClain doesn't come back), so there's no reason to draft a single offensive player.

Thanks to Claibust and Carr's pitiful performances, we can't draft a quality DLineman and a safety in the top of the draft. Now we have to spend it on another freaking cornerback.

We should be taking the best player, but I will just about guarantee that we target a corner in the 1st. Brace yourselves now.

I think this CB hate is a bit overboard, if he is the BPA there should be no issue taking one at 25, there is a legitimate need at that spot.

I would rather take the best guy instead of reaching on a player.

They have seen the benefit of a talented OL, sure hope they try it out on defense.

A CB would have to be far and away the BPA, for me they'd basically have to be a guy who should've went in at least the 10-15 range and the cupboard would have to be totally bare elsewhere. Looking at the guys who are projected to go in the 20-40 range I don't think it's very likely that a CB would be the clear BPA, and it's very likely that there will be at least 2 or 3 DL who could arguably be.

Stephen Jones literally said that the DL "was next" after having rebuilt the OL, so we can only hope that we stick to that.

Yep, hopefully he can keep convincing Jerry against the Manziel's of the draft and continue getting true talent in the 1st.

If they'd ever figure out the last 4 rounds of the draft this team might be dangerous.

But when did he say that? Was it back when they still thought Carr and Claiborne were competent?

I guess the wild card here is what they actually think of Claiborne behind the scenes.

Not really up on the draft yet but I talking about people dismissing a CB out of hand.

DL seems to be a position that people reach on a lot and get burned.

Why would you pick a CB from a program like Wake Forest? Eff that.

I'd even welcome it if we actually got a legit playmaker at the position. Thing is we always blow it.

Newman was worth a mid-late 1st rounder, not the 5th overall pick. Jenkins and Claiborne were plain misses.

Scandrick benefits from being compared with these guys, but he's truly a mid-round talent.

If we're drafting in the late 20's, the latest of 1st tier CB or RT would be good value over the best second-tier DL.

Without even looking to confirm, I'm willing to be that most mock drafts have us taking a CB in the 1st round in at least 8 of the last 10 drafts.

These guys ALWAYS have us taking a 1st round CB.

Scott Wright has us taking Calhoun at 20. Not my first choice of DL and based on his scenario, I'd rather have Goldman or Dupree. But at least it's looking in the right direction.
