Define success. Given our defense, we're never going to take the next step into legit year-in year-out contender until that is fixed with serious resources being poured into DL.

Could we have squeezed out another win or two this season with better luck or better decisions? Maybe.

Overall given our personnel I think the year was ok. The black cloud of the defense falling apart has been hanging over our heads too much for me to get excited though, and the last few weeks it's become reality.

But if we go 11-5 and miss the playoffs I'm not gonna say we underachieved.
Did we exceed your expectations?

One win, IMO. We should have won the Skins game and that was on the coaching staff as much as the Packers game last year.

Sad for my boy Vinny Curry. Wasting his prime years in a 3-4 as a nickel pass rusher.

I think the guy would be really good in a 4-3.

'Nothing personal' for Dez Bryant against Eagles
December, 12, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas – Dez Bryant’s lip was bloodied after the Dallas Cowboys lost to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thanksgiving.

Bryant was not happy. He caught four passes for 73 yards, but 38 of those yards came on one completion. He and the rest of the Cowboys' offense were unable to do much of anything that day.

"They were being kinda cheap," Bryant said after the game. "That's another story. It is what it is. I'll get it cleaned up and I'll be fine."

Bryant and the Cowboys get their second look at the Eagles on Sunday with first place in the NFC East once again on the line. Unlike the first meeting, the Cowboys can ill afford to lose the rematch with two games to go. With a win Sunday, the Cowboys would be in prime position to win the division.

For Bryant, he does not think his postgame words from Thanksgiving will mean much Sunday

“It’s really nothing personal,” Bryant said. “I just spoke how I felt, that’s all. It’s really nothing personal. You got to stay focused and try to get the W.”

Bryant, who went over 1,000 yards on the season last week in the win against the Chicago Bears, said it wasn’t hard to re-watch the film from the first meeting.

“Whenever you see mistakes that you can learn from, it just makes you that much more ready to go again,” Brown said.

And what did he learn?

“I’m not going to get into all the details,” Bryant said. “I have too much info.”

Bryant offered up another message on Thanksgiving. He said he couldn’t wait for the second game against the Eagles. He said the same thing on Thursday.

“Oh man, it actually went by pretty quick,” Bryant said of the time between Eagles’ games. “I couldn’t wait to get into meetings, watch film, and look at these guys again. Can’t wait.”

Can't wait for what? To prove, again, that you are just a top 10 WR that wants paid like an elite one?

They were definitely being cheap, and getting away with murder in the secondary.

Josh Brent doubtful for Sunday's game
December, 12, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent missed his second straight day of practice with a calf injury suffered on Wednesday and is doubtful for Sunday’s first-place matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Cowboys will take the decision up until game time, but the chances of him playing are slim with such a short time to recover and the need to have as many healthy defensive linemen as possible.

"The more experienced player, the player who’s comfortable with the scheme, the guy who’s been in situations before, I think you give those guys more of a chance," coach Jason Garrett said. "Some of the younger players, the less experienced guys, maybe you give less of a chance. But Josh, he’s a very honest guy. He’s very straight forward about everything in his life, and certainly what his status is, so we’ll see what he’s able to do and we’ll take it the next 48, 72 hours."

Rookie defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is probable with a rib injury and should play after missing the Dec. 4 meeting against the Chicago Bears. Cornerback Tyler Patmon will also return to the lineup after missing the past three games with knee and ankle injuries. Patmon and safety Jeff Heath are probable. Heath has missed the past two games following thumb surgery.

Quarterback Tony Romo (back), linebacker Rolando McClain (knee) and defensive end George Selvie (thumb) are also probable. Linebacker Dekoda Watson will miss his third straight game with a hamstring injury.

Actually, you know the insane thing?

We may need to win out to make the playoffs.... 11-5 (1 loss) probably loses tiebreakers to the Lions and Seahawks/Cardinals.

But if we do win out, we could very well get the bye.

Green Bay is ahead of us, but if us and Seattle are both 12-4, we get the bye over them because of head to head.

That is absolutely nuts.

One loss is the difference between a bye and missing the playoffs completely.

I want this win bad.

Even in comparison to previous 8-7 teams that could have backed in, I think there was enough progress that it would be a shame if it couldn't pay off.

That said, if they lose to the Eagles, I will be livid. Or worse, beat the Eagles and suffer a let down loss to the Colts.

I just can't see this team the way it is constructed running the table versus both.

Im with you. I want this one really bad, partly because of my innate hatred of the eagles and the disastrous Thanksgiving game, but moreso because this year's release deserves a shot at post season play. Based upon the complete body of work.

Just imagine a scenario where we have ridden Murray all game, the defense has given up some points as expected. We get to the 4th up 35-32, and Romo with a fresh arm after not having to throw much all game tosses a pick 6 with less than two minutes left to lose the game. It very well could end the internet as we know it.

Offensively the team should be stronger in December, if anything. Chicago proved they can be effective in cold weather.

The defense should also be better relative to playing in perfect conditions like in AT&T Stadium simply because most opposing offenses are that much more limited in cold weather.

Cowboys' Josh Brent out against Eagles

December, 13, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys have ruled defensive tackle Josh Brent out of Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Brent (calf) had been listed as doubtful on Friday's injury report. He played in his first game in two years on Dec. 4 against the Chicago Bears, making two tackles in 22 snaps.

The Cowboys had hoped Brent's size would help combat a Philadelphia running game that gained 256 yards in its 33-10 win on Thanksgiving.

With two games left in the season, the Cowboys might not be able to wait for Brent to fully recover to play again.
---------------

Unreal.

Fat slob gives a handful of snaps against Chicago and can't go in the biggest game of the effing year.

Pondering Cowboys' 46: DL health factors in final spot

December, 13, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- When I wondered earlier this week if Henry Melton would be inactive Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, some of you snickered or worse. Melton could have Josh Brent's calf injury to thank if he plays this week.

As we ponder the Dallas Cowboys' 46-man roster for Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the final spot comes down to the defensive line, as it seems to always do.

Let's take care of the inactives we already can guess: quarterback Dustin Vaughan, tackles Donald Hawkins and Tony Hills, linebacker Dekoda Watson and defensive end Kenneth Boatright.

With Jeff Heath returning to the lineup after missing two games because of thumb surgery, that should put Jakar Hamilton back on the inactive list. Boatright was called up from the practice squad this week, but I just can't see the Cowboys turning to him with three games to go.

So now it's down to Brent, who is listed as doubtful, and Melton, who leads the Cowboys in sacks. I realize there are people who think it's foolish to even consider sitting Melton, but there are plenty of people around Valley Ranch who want more from Melton. Had DeMarcus Lawrence been healthy last week against the Chicago Bears, Melton likely wouldn't have had his homecoming against his former team.

Lawrence is healthy this week but Brent hurt his calf in Wednesday's practice, putting his availability in question.

The only other possibility to get a ninth defensive lineman to the game would be to de-activate wide receiver Devin Street. Two weeks ago I asked coach Jason Garrett if Street's game-day spot could be in jeopardy and he all but shot it down because if something happened to Dez Bryant or Terrance Williams they would need another outside receiver. I would counter that you could get through a game with Dwayne Harris or Gavin Escobar playing outside and worry about the issue for the next game.

So that's why the final spot comes down to the defensive line.

Here is the guess at the inactives: Vaughan, Hills, Hawkins, Boatright, Watson, Hamilton and Brent.
