Witten is definitely on the downside these days.
It's always hard to admit this from both the player and fans point of view but the number of years in the league is somewhat prima faces evidence of a player's career trend. He has some game left but he is definitely toward the end. It has been a good run and in my option has replaced Novacek as all time tight end for Dallas. He needs to brace for the inevitable which is pay adjustments and reduced playing time.

I never thought of Novacek as the all-timer TE for Dallas, not with Cosbie, DuPree and Ditka there.
But now Witten is clearly above all of them, despite the lack of playoffs success.

The individual you cite are very notable but they didn't have the opportunity to play on championship and Super Bowl teams like Novacek did.

Ditka was part of the SB VI winning team, DuPree XII

Yes they were but Dupree was behind Novacek in stats and post season and Ditka was a Cowboy for only three years or so. To me Novacek was the reigning TE alltimer before Witten.

Ditka was a JAG when he got here...he is not even in the conversation of good Cowboy TEs.

Marty B higher than Witten
Can't say that is wrong, really.

Witten is settling down into his twilight years. He's still a pro's pro, but not capable of taking over a game anymore like he used to.

It is kind of hilarious how it is clear the Browns fans are stuffing the ballots.

DuPree played in a less pass-friendly (pre 1979) era than Novachek and was a complete TE who could block and catch passes.

Witten is #1 all-time cowboy TE. I remember another thread where we discussed where in the Top 10 of all time Cowboys, regardless of position.

I agree with that, but I put Novachek tied for 3 with Cosbie.

I don't think anyone would argue otherwise, this is a discussion about who was "#1 all-time cowboy TE" before him.
