Henry Melton not concerned about future
November, 17, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- When Henry Melton signed with the Dallas Cowboys in the offseason, he was betting on himself.

He signed a one-year deal with a three-year option after missing all but three games last season with the Chicago Bears because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament. If the Cowboys pick up the option on Melton’s deal, he is guaranteed $9 million in 2015. The base salaries in 2015-17 are worth $7.5 million each year.

Melton has five sacks on the season. With one more sack, he will pocket a $250,000 incentive. He will get $500,000 for seven sacks and $750,000 for eight sacks.

But there will be a question as to whether the Cowboys pick up the option. He plays fewer than 30 snaps a game. He does not start. Is it wise to pay a player $9 million if he plays so little? The Cowboys could always work out a new deal with Melton before they have to pick up the option on the first day of the 2015 league year.

“Ah, man, I don’t think about that,” Melton said of the option. “We’re trying to win games.”

Melton has 3.5 of his team-high five sacks in the last three games. He has been affecting the quarterback, as Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli likes to say.

“Any time you can smell what kind of deodorant he’s wearing, it’s always a good sign,” Melton said. “It’s good getting after him and getting some pressure.”

He was unable to sack Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles in the Cowboys' last game, but he did get close enough to smell Bortles’ deodorant.

“I want to say he was wearing the Swagger Old Spice,” Melton joked.

Melton has six tackles, two tackles for loss, 13 quarterback pressures, three pass breakups and two fumble recoveries. He has started only two games, coming in mostly as situational player as he has worked his way back from the knee surgery.

“It’s just a process,” Melton said. “I feel I get a little bit more confident in it every week. I’m still not 100 percent, but we’re grinding it out every week, in the weight room to get it where it needs to be.”

He's basically back to playing at a Pro Bowl level halfway through a season after an ACL tear so I'd say he's worth 8-9 a year or whatever it is. He's definitely worth that money much more than Carr is.

I think I will let the season play out before I say he is worth 8-9 a year that's a lot of money for a DT, he would be getting paid at a top 3 rate.

Before I pay him that I am waiting to see what Suh is asking for.

I also wait until I can see if he can play full time. He has only played about 50% of the snaps so far. Let's get that number closer to 70 and then see.

melton seems to be getting better by the game. Very good signing, re-sign at a decent price.

He wouldn't count anything close to that against our cap next year. With that being said we can always try to renegotiate with him as well. At this point I'm not apt to let him walk though. He has been an excellent player for us this season and at his age there is no reason to let him go.

I'd not freak at signing him for 9 million/yr.

Carr, on the other hand is paid way beyond what he's worth on the field.

I don't know how the contract is structured but unless they restructure I don't see how its not 9 million against the cap.

I'm sure they anticipated restructuring when they signed this, but IMO he needs to do a lot more before I give him top 3 tackle money.

It's 9 mil all guaranteed. Which means it gets spread out over the 3 years of the contract just like a signing bonus. Which means he would only count about 3 mil against the cap. So yeah, has nothing to do with restructuring. The contract is designed this way and without Ware's contract on our D-line we don't really have much money sunk into the D-line at all. We could afford that for Melton.

Oh ok I did not know that's how guaranteed money is spread out.

I still am not ready to go all in on him, its not like he is dominating the line of scrimmage most of his recent sacks are coming from stunts.

Now that can change by seasons end but so far he has only been a tick above Crawford in impact, I just want to see more, hopefully he removes all doubt.

Since he's starting to round into form now, he just needs to dominate down the stretch to guarantee himself that money.
