Cowboys' DL door not quite as revolving
November, 16, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Injuries along the Dallas Cowboys' defensive line last year almost got to be comical. Too often the Cowboys signed a player on a Tuesday and needed him to play that week.

"That's a real challenge for anybody," coach Jason Garrett said. "It's hard to do even when they get their feet underneath them with a little bit of a foundation, let alone do it so quickly. So we had to do that a few different times, but that's the nature of this league. Sometimes you have a rash of injuries and you just have to deal with it."

The Cowboys used 20 defensive linemen last year. Only four remain on the team this year: George Selvie, Nick Hayden, Anthony Spencer and Kyle Wilber, who is now a linebacker. The Cowboys cut DeMarcus Ware in the offseason and saw him sign with the Denver Broncos. Jason Hatcher signed with the Washington Redskins.

Of the 14 remaining 2013 defensive linemen, only four are on a roster now: Everette Brown (Washington), Jarius Wynn (Buffalo), Frank Kearse (Washington) and Marvin Austin (Denver). Ten are not in the NFL.

Is that not among the top reasons why the Cowboys were putrid last year on defense?

Through 10 games this season, the Cowboys have not had to force feed new additions to get into the lineup. They have still had in-season additions, like Spencer and DeMarcus Lawrence, and they could see Josh Brent return at some point this season.

"We've been more fortunate up to this point on the defensive line and that's been a good thing for us," Garrett said. "We like this rotation, we like this competition the guys have to get a roster spot, be part of the active list on Sunday and then competition for spots and playing time during the game. It's been a good thing. We feel good about that rotation. I think it's been for our team."

I'm curious to see what Brent can bring. He's known for the past 6 months that he would be on the active roster around this time, so why he couldn't have gotten himself in better shape before now is perplexing and makes me question his dedication. But if he can give us more than Hayden does, I don't care how fat he is.

I'm curious as to why we're so obsessed with a guy who has done nothing on our team thus far other than kill a teammate

Yeah...the guy has been out of football for awhile and is overweight. Plus I'm not sure if he head is on right.

Of course, this "signing" has Jerrys stench all over it so it shouldn't make sense.

They have spent quite a bit of time on Brent, probably just want to see what the guy can do in a 4-3...he's never had that chance in the NFL. He is not costing much at all, so it is a low risk looksee.

Done nothing on our team?

Never let the facts get in the way of some good indignation.
I am all for giving him a shot, but he really has not done much. Nothing indignant about that.

This is simply not true, the stats and the eyeball test bear that out.

If he had done nothing or not much why would the team still be investing time in him, that makes no sense.

Why would Jerry risk the backlash for a JAG, do you think Marinelli would waste a roster space on somebody who has not done much?

Brent was a 7th round pick why would the team waste time on him if he had not done much, this is not like last year, there is some depth on the line already.

What sense does it make that Jerry is bending over backward for a 7th round pick that has not shown much?

It is simply true. The stats...Josh Brent of the career numbers of 1.5 sacks and 40 tackles. This is still all based on potential, not production. I'm not going to Jiggy this, but the fact of the matter is he has done next to nothing in the NFL.

:lol Sacks.

The year he started 12 games he was second in sacks and tackles for all NG's, most of them playing in 16 games.

How is that doing next to nothing?

So why are the Cowboys wasting time on a 7th round pick if he has done next to nothing?

2nd in sacks with 1.5. Wow. Get him in the HOF.

The fact of the matter is he has done very little. Seasons with 16, 6, and 22 tackles. Zero sacks in 2 of 3 seasons. I never said they are wasting time, even though you keep saying that over and over again. Maybe if you say it again it will make more impact.

He has had a very nondescript career up to this point, minus killing someone, so them hanging onto him is about potential, not production.

it's called a talent deficit on the d-line. We're throwing shit at the wall, and this is a cheap option that has some decent upside. Call it a Marinelli special.

So let's just forget that he was behind a probowl player when looking at stats, and then ignore that when he had the chance to start his numbers were in line with all other top NG's that year.

Way to put the blinders on.

And I really can't believe you are using sacks as a barometer, Brandon Mebane has had 0 sacks in 2 of the last 4 years, what a bum.

You keep poo pooing his numbers when they are pretty good for a guy who was getting limited snaps, what type of numbers do you expect from an NG anyway?

I am not poo pooing his numbers...just saying he has not done much. Nothing to get all riled up about. Although feel free to do so.

Not riled up I think we are pretty close to feeling the same way, I just think he has shown much more than people are giving him credit for.

If you haven't started a full season in the NFL as a NT you've done next to nothing.
