Tony Romo minimizes what he did, but it was significant

Tony Romo has played hurt before.

But Sunday, he not only played, but played well.

Romo threw three touchdowns, and got the Cowboys to a big enough lead he was able to watch Brandon Weeden finish up, so he could get a jump start on the bye week.

“I think this will be an important week just for me,” Romo said of the bye, via Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com. “Just having this one to kind of get back on track a little bit and help heal up some stuff.”

When he practiced twice this week, it seemed clear he’d play. But he admitted he took a Toradol before the game to help with the pain, but didn’t wear much extra padding.

The protection came from the game plan (mostly quick, short passes early) and the fact his offensive line was whole again, with Doug Free and Ronald Leary back in the lineup.

He tried to downplay it after the game, saying: “A lot of guys are banged up, a lot of guys played. At the end of the day nobody cares when you step on the field. It’s all about winning.”

But teammates saw it with their own eyes.

“It’s unbelievable to do that after one week and he doesn’t complain,” tight end Jason Witten said. “He just goes to work. He minimized those distractions and I thought he did a good job coming from that injury and I think just shows it’s one thing to compete and come back from it, it’s another thing to play as well as he did. I think that shows a lot about what he is and how he prepares and just how much toughness he has.”

Granted, he’s going to be sore after a long flight home, but with the week off to heal, there shouldn’t be any mystery about his status moving forward.
