Why not ride DeMarco Murray in overtime?

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Running back DeMarco Murray shouted several high-decibel curse words as he entered the locker room after the Dallas Cowboys' 20-17 overtime loss to the Washington Redskins and kept hollering after the doors closed.

About an hour later, after getting treatment and taking his time to shower and get dressed, Murray attributed his outburst to the frustration a competitor feels after a tough loss.

If Murray had any complaints about the play-calling late in the game, he certainly wasn't going to air them publicly.

"Whatever play is called, that's what we believe in," said Murray, who padded his NFL rushing lead by gaining 141 yards on 19 carries. "Scott [Linehan] does a great job to put us in great positions to make plays."

That has certainly been the case most of the time this season for the 6-2 Cowboys, but it was curious, to say the least, to see the NFL's best running team put the burden on quarterback Tony Romo's bruised back on the final few plays of overtime.

With the Cowboys needing a field goal to extend the game or a touchdown to win it, Dallas opened the drive with a run to the right by Murray, who followed a powerful lead block by backup left guard Mackenzy Bernadeau for an 8-yard gain.

Murray finished one shy of the magic number -- the Cowboys are 17-1 when Murray gets at least 20 carries -- so it certainly isn't as if the Cowboys suddenly got concerned about limiting Murray's historically heavy workload with the game on the line.

For the first time all season, the Cowboys just got pass-happy, something that had happened on a regular basis over the last few years.

The Cowboys got the ball in Murray's hands on second-and-2, but it was on a play-action pass to the flat. For whatever reason, the Cowboys' timing on the play got out of whack, and linebacker Perry Riley Jr. dropped Murray for a 1-yard loss.

In that situation, when the Cowboys clearly aren't going to punt, a run on third down would be a reasonable call. But Linehan called a pass on third down (incomplete to Jason Witten) and again on fourth down (incomplete to Dez Bryant).

Hindsight being 20/20, Linehan would at least like a do-over on the second-down call.

"One of our goals was to use play-action on second down," Linehan said. "The whole idea was if it wasn't there, we were going to check down. I don't know what happened [to the timing of the play].

"I'm probably going to wish I had run the ball on the second play, but that's the way it goes sometimes."

Like the running back, Linehan's bosses had no complaints about the play-calling, at least not in the range of any microphones. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he wasn't going to second-guess. Head coach Jason Garrett said he felt "completely confident in the rhythm he's in calling plays, if anything I would have passed more."

All in all, Linehan has done a heck of a job. It took eight games -- and an overtime period -- to give fans and media a chance to pounce on a play-calling crisis. That's progress around these parts, as painful as it was Monday night.

There is no good answer for not running it in that situation. Romo was clearly shot and Murray had just ripped off an 8 yard gain. It was almost as if they wanted to see if Romo was healthy, but you test that out in practice, not in overtime of a game.

That's fine, and it was obvious that we thought we saw something on film we felt we could exploit since we called playaction so damn much on 2nd down.

But after failing so damn much, and after seeing how much we were struggling to pick up the blitz coupled with Romo not being 100%, your common sense has to kick in and you need to adjust accordingly.

We failed miserably in that regard.

This is just another case of a coach outsmarting himself.

Nothing to see here Schmitty....move along. :unsure

That's the thing, though.....it wasn't just limited to the OT, (although that was the worst example of ignoring the run) we kept passing all night long on 2nd and short and I don't know why.

It's not just about OT, the lack of running throughout the game was a mistake.

I don't have a big issue with the play calling, mostly in OT. I am not going to condemn Linehan for a couple of bad play calls. He has been excellent this year and I see no reason to doubt him now.

:lol

I bet you would have, you pass happy faggot.

There it is Schmitty, clear as day - your boy admitting that he just wants to pass pass pass and it has nothing to do with the quality of the O-line as you have tried to argue.

Garrett is what he is, and while Linehan had a bad night, it's still 1000 times better than having Garrett run the offense.

:lol I am assuming that was a joke and Garrett didn't actually say that.

I do too...but it is more fun to run around like a bunch of fags right now. This loss sucks big time, but if you told me we'd be 6-2 at the midway point I would take it every time.

Exactly.

I didn't see any way the Cowboys could keep up the mental edge coming off the wins against Seattle and NY.

Anyone that doesn't think Dallas was looking past Washington to the Cardinals is either an idiot or an idiot.

Combine that with just an overall piss poor gameplan and effort...I'm not surprised with the loss.

Its one game....I'll take the loss and a healthy Romo- because it looked for a few minutes like he was done for the year.

This team has the talent to make some noise...but someone has to fix the pass rush, and someone needs to get to the QB.

Painfully obvious last night that Marinelli was afraid to blitz. Funny though that Haslett with a decimated secondary and our vaunted OL :dunce was easy pickins for a blitz every other play.

We could be 6-2 or 2-6, but I don't want to lose to the Redskins, especially with a 3rd string Colt McCoy and rookie doofus HC.

But it was obvious we were reading our clippings and looking past them and despite running the ball up their arse every first down we just had to get cute and pass happy instead of playing smart. Didn't help that the defense failed to show up in the 2nd half or Durant getting hurt, but the fumbles, mistakes, play-calling should've easily given us at least 17 pts at half and 28+ for the game.

But this team deserved to lose the way they played and it was almost fitting with Jerry doing live interviews during the game and then running to the sidelines to play manager of HC, not to mention the idiotic decision to put Romo back in the game at the end. Last night was basically the last 18 years wrapped up in one game.

100,000 stayed in their seats even longer than 60 minutes, Jerruh gets interviewed on TV, Cowboys are the rage in water-cooler talk in offices around the country this morning...

We did it our way, baby!

I'm not so sure about that.

It would be easier to believe that if Philly wasn't coming off a loss presenting us with the opportunity to take sole possession of first place in the division. If we overlooked the Skins even with this opportunity, then this team is no different than before and we were wrong about them.

I don't buy that we were looking past the Skins either. The Cardinals aren't some elite franchise who you look to measure yourself against like you would a New England or Green Bay.

They're the Arizona Cardinals. They're not a bad franchise....but they're certainly not a team where you'd circle the calendar and get fired up to play them.

We got whipped. Plain and simple.

We reverted back to the bad habits that we've frequently seen from the Cowboys under Garrett.....too much passing and poor tackling.

Yeah, the tackling was absolutely atrocious. I hope it doesn't become a trend. Our tackling has been pretty damn good most of the season

Blows my mind. How many times did we throw from the fucking shotgun on 2nd and 2? Just ridiculous.

We got out-coached. It's as simple as that.
