I hear you but don't all together share the same sentiments. My biggest objection is similar to yours as to the post season games but his conference record and number of championships are stand alone accomplishments. I really don't have any idea who could do better.I think he's incredibly overrated. His recruiting has gotten worse over the years, he's a horrible big game coach, and he's one of the worst I've ever seen at making in game adjustments. While the win over 'Bama was sweet, I knew all it would do is reinforce the idea that Stoops is one of the game's best coaches. It's been about 15 years since OU won a national championship, and his bowl record (BCS, namely) is atrocious. But, he keeps pumping out 2-3 loss seasons against a weak conference, usually losing to at least one of the very, very small group of teams in the Big 12 that are actually competitive.
But he gets showered with praise because of reputation and tenure. I have high standards for the Sooners. Eeking out Big 12 championships and not much else doesn't do it for me, nor should it any other OU fan.
And that is also maddening, because you're right about finding someone better. No program would ever can a Bob Stoops, with his record as you pointed out. But Big 12 titles and conference domination are usually the icing on the cakes that are national championships. Maybe I just haven't gotten over 55-19, Boise St., or losing to a WVU team whose head coach bolted right before the bowl game. All in all, I see a team that is growing less competitive in the national landscape, not to mention it's own conference. How long before Texas becomes formidable again as well?I hear you but don't all together share the same sentiments. My biggest objection is similar to yours as to the post season games but his conference record and number of championships are stand alone accomplishments. I really don't have any idea who could do better.
He gets raked over the coals on twitter a couple times of year. He just doesn't seem well liked.ESPN's Darren Rovell getting raked over the coals for tweeting about ND WR Justin Brent sleeping with pornstar Lisa Ann (hawt) with a picture of ND's conduct policy as it relates to sex.
I truly mean this in the least offensive way possible.... but what a ghey.
I agree 100%.I think he's incredibly overrated. His recruiting has gotten worse over the years, he's a horrible big game coach, and he's one of the worst I've ever seen at making in game adjustments. Speaking of Tech, I honestly believe a big problem with Stoops is that he's too easily influenced by teams like Baylor and Tech.Don't forget always losing to Tech in Lubbock....
I don't know, man...if you are in a spread conference you have to adjust your defense.Speaking of Tech, I honestly believe a big problem with Stoops is that he's too easily influenced by teams like Baylor and Tech.
Instead of sticking with a style of play and with personnel packages that have led to successful seasons, Stoops and his staff have tried to play copy cat and it hasn't worked out for them.
Take the 2012 season for instance. On defense Oklahoma went with a base defense where they didn't use LBs. It was basically 4 DL and 7 DBs. This dumb decision resulted in opponents killing Oklahoma by running the football. It seemed like we were giving up about 40 ppg. All because they wanted to put more speed on the field because they thought it would help them better defend against spread offenses. Huge failure.
Great teams make their opponent adjust to them not vice versa. It seems that Stoops has forgotten that.
I'm hoping the stars all align and that Murray stays healthy this year and that he and the Cowboys agree on a sensible contract.Ameer Abdullah is an absolute stud. The draft next year could be seriously loaded with RBs. At worst it should give us some leverage with Murray.
You're absolutely right. I'm a spoiled fan, I can admit that. Oklahoma will probably finish with a 10-3 record and the season will still be considered a disappointment to me.You guys have a short tem memory regarding Stoops. It was miserable for several years with Oklahoma's football program between winning coaches. There was an eternity of bad coaches before Switzer was found then when he left it was another grueling term of wasted years before Stoops was hired. I could go back further with this scenario but most of you were not born. Oklahoma fans a like rich kids. They get too used to the best then that's not enough. Thank your lucky stars that even in the worst years OU is still a winner.I get frustrated at times but it doesn't take long for the memory to kick in.
I'm sure you were aware that Stoops has had the program in a transition mode for the past three years. They went back to the balanced attach approach from the spread after Landry finished with his tenure as QB. Bell was the first phase to the transition but it has been a little shaky for a while. Knight Is the first year of the current plan but the lines and receivers are still a little ways away. I thin next season the process will come to fruition. You're absolutely right. I'm a spoiled fan, I can admit that. Oklahoma will probably finish with a 10-3 record and the season will still be considered a disappointment to me.
As I wrote in my earlier post, the point of frustration with me is that I don't see any improvement in the program. It's become stagnant and I'd even argue that we're regressing.
