Jerry Jones: DeMarcus Lawrence had everybody ‘frothing at the mouth’ in practice last week

Getting pressure on the quarterback is not enough, Dallas defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli needs his defensive linemen to get more sacks. The Cowboys have sacked opposing quarterbacks only six times this season. Twenty-nine teams have done that more than the Cowboys.

But help is on the way.

All signs point to rookie defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence making his debut on Nov. 2 against the Arizona Cardinals. Lawrence, who fractured his right foot in training camp, returned to practice last week.
Marinelli said the second round pick looked “quick and explosive.”

“Lawrence had everybody frothing at the mouth a little bit out there last week,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday morning on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. “He has really improved his body during this time off. He’s used it to really have a lot of strength work. It’s something that he didn’t do as much [in college] as he’s doing now. He’s had quite a physical improvement.”

Defensive tackle Henry Melton currently leads the Cowboys with 1.5 sacks. It’s certainly possible that Lawrence could end up leading the team in that category despite missing half the season.

I know the quote is by Jerry and he loves to just pump sunshine but truth be told I think Lawrence is really going to come in here and play well in this defense. I thought that all the way back to training camp when there were lots of positive reports coming out about this guy.

There's still a lot of teams that scare me in the NFC -- Packers, Eagles, not sure I want to see SF or Seattle again either.

Feel like we could handle the Lions.

The Lions probably give me as much apprehension as anyone right now.

Me too. They have been winning without Megatron. Imagine how good they will be when he finally comes back.

Honestly, I think that's part of their problem. They force too much shit to him, because he's so good, and it gets them in trouble. Right now, they're playing more balanced, and taking what the defense is giving them. If they'd do that when Cal gets back, I think they'd be that much better.

It's too much to believe that this guy could actually be a player.
Ravi I think he Is going to surprise even you. It will take a few series for him to get the speed and flow of the NFL level game but once he absorbs that he will be where he needs to be to become effective. The most difficult thing for him will probably be how to process all the activity in his peripheral vision. He will likely be so focused on a target that he won't see all the activity he needs to react to. He will probably be blindsided a few times but will learn how to deal with it.

This seemed like a good idea at the time.

Not being able to sack the QB is going to bite Dallas at the most inopportune time if its not corrected quickly.

And its just not the sacks...its the "hits" on the QB that add up too. The D just isn't getting there right now.

I like that Lawrence looks good...but he's still a rookie.

TOP is a two way street. It's not just your offense that causes you to win TOP. It's also your defense doing a great job of getting off the field. Everyone likes to point to TOP as the reason why our defense looks so much better this year. They forget however that we are dominating in TOP in part because of our defenses play this year.
Their confidence that the offense will keep the ball lets them play like they don't have to pace themselves.

It's said that the hardest points to get in a football game are usually the first points. The Dallas defense has been able to make teams play just as hard to get their first, second, and third points.

Ravi I think he Is going to surprise even you.
No one wants that more than I do, LT.

I will say the way the offense is playing now will make it much easier on Lawrence. If I were the DC, I'd also put him in only on 3rd and over 5 to go.

The combination of fresh legs, less time on the field, and focusing 90% on pass rush will give him the best chance to succeed.

DeMarcus Lawrence, Cowboys excited about return
October, 22, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- The trade deadline is Oct. 28, but the Dallas Cowboys already feel like they have a big acquisition on the way in rookie defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.

Lawrence will begin his second week of practice on Thursday as he works his way back from a broken right foot suffered in training camp and can make his season debut Nov. 2 against the Arizona Cardinals.

On 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday, owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Lawrence had “everybody frothing at the mouth,” at practice last week. The Cowboys placed Lawrence on short-term injured reserve, which knocked him out of the first eight games, but allowed him to get 100 percent healthy after surgery.

The Cowboys have an obvious need for a pass rusher with only seven sacks in seven games. Coach Jason Garrett acknowledged the pass rush was not good in the win against the New York Giants and must improve as the season goes on.

“You have to win one-on-one rushes,” Garrett said. “You have to get more pressure with your down guys. Maybe it’s one-on-one rushes, maybe it’s rush games, maybe it’s bringing people. i don’t think we did a good enough job affecting the quarterback in [Sunday’s] game. You talk all you want about not having any sacks but you also have to affect the guy. I thought they did a pretty good job in their passing game getting the ball out quickly. We didn’t get a chance to get to the quarterback and disrupt the passing game as much as we liked. There were some good individual efforts, and at times we did a good job in that area, but we continue to have to improve there. It’s a really important part of playing good defense.”

That’s where Lawrence comes in. The Cowboys gave up their second- and third-round picks to the Washington Redskins in order to move up to the 34th pick in the second round to take Lawrence. He was their third-rated right defensive end in the draft behind Jadeveon Clowney and Anthony Barr, who went first and ninth overall, respectively.

Lawrence had 20 sacks in two years at Boise State and was having a productive camp until getting hurt in a pass rush drill against Tyron Smith.

“Just working on my movement, getting back into it so at times I felt a little rusty, but then again I felt like I never left, if you know what I mean,” Lawrence said of his practice work last week. “It’s really just getting back into football shape.”

Lawrence said his foot has not given him any issues in his rehab, and the time in the weight room has made him stronger.

“I feel like I put on at least 10 pounds basically just working out every day. That’s all I could do,” Lawrence said. “I feel like I’ve gotten a lot stronger and in some way I feel like I ain’t lost my step either. It’s a good feeling I have about coming back.”
