DeMarcus Lawrence to practice this week
October, 13, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas –Rookie defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence will be on the field for the first time since training camp when the Dallas Cowboys return to practice on Wednesday.

Lawrence suffered the injury on July 29 while in one-on-one pass rush drills with Tyron Smith and had surgery a few days later. The Cowboys placed him on short-term injured reserve, which will keep him out for the first eight weeks of the season but he can start practice Wednesday.

“He’s done really well,” coach Jason Garrett said of Lawrence’s rehab. “Worked hard, so we’re hopeful he can do some football stuff on Wednesday and get himself moving forward.”

Lawrence make his season debut on Nov. 2 against the Arizona Cardinals. The Cowboys will have to create an opening on the 53-man roster once he is eligible to play. In camp, Lawrence, whom the Cowboys took with the 34th overall pick after a draft-day trade with the Washington Redskins, was proving to be the best pass rusher before the injury.

The Cowboys' defensive line has only 3.5 sacks through six games and as a team the Cowboys have just seven.

Lawrence does not have pressure to play every snap, but the Cowboys need him to affect the quarterback.

“We’ll see what kind of role he can have,” Garrett said. “He was certainly doing some good things before he got hurt, and we’re optimistic about his future and his ability to contribute this year. But his job is to get himself healthy, get himself going again, get his feet underneath him and trying to improve as a football player.”

He was the newcomer I was most excited to see. He had a lot of great early reports and then got hurt before we really got to see him play. I'm hopeful as I think Lawrence is instantly our most athletic D-lineman.

Cowboys second-round pick DeMarcus Lawrence 'beyond excited' about return
October, 14, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is "beyond excited" to return to practice for the first time since breaking right foot in training camp on Wednesday.

"I'm going to have a lot to work on getting back out there, but I feel like this has been a loooong time coming," Lawrence said. "Just get back out there, work on my fundamentals and my technique and hopefully I'll get back to normal real soon."

The Cowboys traded up to pick Lawrence in the second round in May with hopes he could impact the pass rush. He was off to a strong start in training camp before getting injured in a one-on-one pass-rush drill with Tyron Smith.

Rehabbing and watching was hard on Lawrence, but the Cowboys still need help rushing the passer. They only have seven sacks so far this season.

"I just had to come to the realization I was going to be back real soon so just sit back and countdown the days and weeks and now it's almost here," he said.

The Cowboys placed Lawrence on short-term injured reserve, which will keep him out of the first six games. He can practice for the next two weeks on a roster exemption before returning to action Nov. 2 against the Arizona Cardinals.

"I feel like it would be hard just trying to coming out and go straight into a game week, so these two (weeks of) practice will help me out," Lawrence said. "It'll let me get back into the defensive scheme."

It will also help him work on his conditioning. He said he has had no problems with his foot during the rehab.

"You never know if you're in football shape until you start playing football again," Lawrence said, "so we'll find out tomorrow."
