JJT: J.J. Wilcox wants to make impact

J.J. Wilcox had only five tackles against the Houston Texans, but it was one of the better games he's played with the Dallas Cowboys.

He was aggressive making tackles near the line of scrimmage against the run, and he played well in the secondary, keeping receivers in front of him and making forceful tackles when they caught the ball.

Wilcox didn't start playing safety until his senior year at Georgia Southern, so clearly he's still learning the nuances of the game. That's a lot to ask at the NFL level.

Although it's his first season as a full-time starter, Wilcox said he needs to play better.

"Tick, tick, tick, the clock is moving. It's time," Wilcox said. "I need to be more of an impact player and make more plays. I'm learning, but this is the NFL. You have to make plays,"

Jason Garrett has always liked Wilcox's physical play and his approach to his craft. He's also seen Wilcox struggle, at times, in coverage.

Against Houston, Garrett said Wilcox played with more confidence.

"He did some really good things in the game. He showed up," Garrett said. "I thought he was physical. He was active in space and playing downhill in the run game. He was just around the ball a lot. I thought you felt his presence."

He wrapped up better against the Texans. I think Marinelli has made it a point of emphasis. Even if they aren't talented enough to be dominant at least they make the stops they need to make.

That will be critical against players like Percy Harvin and Marshawn Lynch.

Wilcox stood out to me in the Texans game. He flew to the ball and made solid tackles. The safety position almost doesn't feel like a liability right now. We have no depth but I'm beginning to feel comfortable with the starters. A pass rush would work miracles for this defense. How much longer is Demarcus Lawrence out?

Church had a shitty game tackling. He was a large part of some of the big runs that made our run defense look so bad against the Texans.

Wilcox has a long way to go before being more than a tackle and strike safety. We need one who can cover.

So, what are you saying. "Church wasn't in session"?

Towards the end of the game I saw some bad tackling technique. Wilcox was part of that. He is much improved though.

It drives me crazy to see professional football players stop their feet and dive on the turf when their is a tackling opportunity. Terrible terrible terrible

Spencer doesn't look like the answer. I swear he looked like he was afraid to run on that leg.

He put in his one-and-done performance against the Saints. Consider the half assist he added against the Texans as a bonus... minus his salary and spot on the active roster.

I think what you are seeing from Spencer now is all you're going to get from him.

it's becoming more and more apparent that we are targeting defensive line in the first round next year. We just do not have the manpower to make an impact with pressure

I didn't even notice him, and actually forgot about him. Not exactly inspiring.
