Pondering Cowboys' 46: Terrell McClain active?

October, 4, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- In a perfect world, the Dallas Cowboys would have the same seven inactives every week and Jason Garrett would have decisions of choice, not of situation.

They are close to that this week, however, with linebacker Bruce Carter out with a quadriceps injury, there is some mystery with the final spot as we ponder the 46-man roster for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans at AT&T Stadium.

As we do every week, let’s get the known inactives out of the way: Carter, quarterback Dustin Vaughan and tackle Donald Hawkins. Defensive end Lavar Edwards is also likely to be inactive.

With linebacker Keith Smith called up from the practice squad for the second time in three weeks, the Cowboys’ final decisions will come down to the defensive line. Smith officially takes Morris Claiborne's spot on the 53-man roster, but they would not call him up only to be inactive.

So that would mean Korey Toomer is looking at another week of waiting to see his first action.

Up front, the Cowboys have gone with eight defensive linemen for every game. Terrell McClain was something of a surprise inactive last week, but he practiced just once as he was coming back from a concussion. The final spot went to Ken Bishop last week, with Davon Coleman also being inactive.

With McClain taking part in full practices this week, he should get the nod over Bishop. I would take my chances with a player having extra incentive going against his former team, like McClain is this week.

Here is the guess at the inactives: Carter, Vaughan, Hawkins, Edwards, Toomer, Coleman and Bishop.
