TE blocking will be key. The Giants actually used Larry Donnell effectively en route to nearly 200 yards on the ground against them.

We have run on better defenses so far than Houston. If we can't, that means there is something awry.
This true but I am waiting for teams to start making adjustments, maybe it will not be like the past where if the game plan bogs down we look lost.

At least we looked like we can make adjustments which was key in the Rams game.

I think that the Giants really turned a corner as a team in their handling of Watt. It will be a good test for Callahan and co.

I don't expect to lose the game. The Texans are a limited team offensively. But I am definitely looking forward to that battle up front.
If we get beaten by the Texans and their D wins the LOS battle, that will erase what it has taken a quarter of a season (and longer) to build. They have not stopped anyone running the ball.

I can deal with other ways to lose, but if we run it as we have and stick to it, it is hard to imagine not being productive.

Or it means that the Texans sell out to stop the run and we should have a ton of options in the passing game.

Yep.

Even Watt can't do it alone, though at times it seems like he can. Houston really needs other defenders to step up. They need Clowney to be what they drafted him to be instead of another brittle-assed RG3.

Main things for Dallas is to keep building their teamwork and come away without any new injuries.

I'd also like to see the other backs get the football whether they are successful or not. Murray is on pace for way too many carries.

The Texans have serious DL issues in that their DL really isn't where it needs to be. It is not horrible, and it has Watt and Crick who is good, but frankly, their problem is the nose. They didn't get a good one in the draft thanks to Nix's injury and they were desperate enough to sign Ryan Pickett off the street.

They run the old planet theory 3-4 under Crennel which is just like what Parcells and Belichick have done. That needs a solid nose.

Thanks for the mini primer I really had no idea about there DL issues, I need to read up on them.

I know the secondary is pretty average as well.

This seems to set up nicely for us. If you want an idea of how we look against a good defense, just rewind the opener. We had running room in that game against a good 9er defense. Murray best hang on to the fucking ball.

Murray, Romo, and the defense took turns crapping the bed before Romo finally had a complete diarrheic meltdown.

I wonder what might have been if it weren't for those 4 ridiculous turnovers and early blown coverages.

i think we'd be 4-0

i called all the 49ers troubles before the season started. they aren't very good, and probably won't be.

The 9ers issues are on offense; they plug reserves in on defense and look strong on that side of the ball.
I loved watching them handle the iggs.

still aside from the turnovers we fucking handled that 49ers D. we were carving them up at will.

The play calling was suspect in that game too. We didn't lean on the run in that game the way we have since then. We were still passing in short yardage and on the goal line and giving up INTs.

Jerry: J.J. Watt 'arguably best player in NFL'
October, 3, 2014

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys expected J.J. Watt to be a very good NFL defensive lineman when they passed on him in the 2011 NFL draft.

The most dominant defensive force in the NFL? No, the Cowboys didn’t see that coming from Watt, who they’ll see Sunday when the Texans come to AT&T Stadium.

“We had him highly, highly evaluated,” owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Friday on 105.3 The Fan, adding that Watt was one of seven or eight players he personally interviewed extensively during pre-draft visits. “Certainly, we felt like we needed to address our offensive line, but let’s just put it like this. It doesn’t surprise me that he’s having the career that he’s having or a successful career.

“It surprises me, though, that he’s arguably the best player in the NFL. That’s surprising but understandable because of the passion that he has.”

Watt was former Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan’s favorite player in the draft. However, the Cowboys had clearly identified offensive tackle as their biggest need and considered Tyron Smith to be a can’t-miss prospect with Hall of Fame potential.

The Cowboys have no complaints about taking Smith with the ninth overall pick, as evidenced by the recently signed extension that is the richest contract for an offensive lineman in NFL history. The Texans are just as thrilled with using the 11th overall pick to select Watt, whose extension makes him the highest paid defensive player in NFL history.

Just imagine how the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars feel. Those teams reached for quarterbacks Jake Locker and Blaine Gabbert with the eighth and 10th overall picks, respectively.

Prediction: Cowboys improve to 4-1
October, 3, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys find themselves in perfect harmony offensively after a shaky start to the season. DeMarco Murray leads the NFL in rushing (534), rushing touchdowns (five), yards before contact (327), yards after contact (207) and first downs (30).

Tony Romo is seeing a direct benefit from the running game.

Since the season-opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Romo has completed 84.6 percent of his play-action passes, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Since Week 2, he has averaged 15.2 yards per attempt on play action and he is 7-of-7 on first down play-action passes.

The Texans have the 24th-ranked run defense through four games and have not faced a running game ranked better than 12th this season. The Cowboys enter with the top-ranked run offense in the NFL, averaging 165 yards per game.

For the defense, Houston offers challenges to a defense that still has questions, but their confidence is high and Ryan Fitzpatrick is not Drew Brees.

The harmony continues and the Cowboys will match their longest winning streak of the Jason Garrett era.

My prediction: Cowboys 30, Texans 22

Scout’s Eye: Dallas Can Take Advantage Of Houston O-Line
Posted 4 hours ago

Bryan Broaddus
Football Analyst/Scout

IRVING, Texas – Here are my keys to Sunday afternoon’s all-Texas tilt against Houston.

We’ve talked a lot about J.J. Watt during the buildup to this game. But honestly, I think it’s the Cowboys’ pass rushers who have the biggest chance to make a statement and impact the outcome this weekend. Meanwhile, if the Texans are going to come out with a road win, I think it’s all about – surprise, surprise – slowing down this Cowboys running game.

Cowboys Win If:

Texans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick likes to get rid of the ball quickly when he is in the pocket. What he is trying to accomplish here is to protect his offensive line, which tends to struggle in the ability to secure its blocks.

It’s an offensive line that has more size than athletic ability, and there will be snaps where you see them having trouble moving their feet. You will see them give up pressure because of this. What I have also noticed about this offensive line, especially on their left side, is that tackle Duane Brown plays very soft in his pass sets. He plays so soft that there are plays where you see Fitzpatrick having to not only throw over the top of an oncoming rusher, but also Brown -- who has been into driven in his lap.

Brown is not the only player to struggle on this line. Guard Ben Jones has a very hard time adjusting to a rusher that plays with any type of quickness. The more movement he has to face, the harder it is for him to play with any type of balance, and he should be tested often in this game. Two weeks ago, the Giants were able to harass Fitzpatrick in the pocket, forcing him into completing less that 59 percent of his passes and forcing three interceptions -- which by far was his worse performance of the season.

Through four games this season this Cowboys defensive line has struggled to get sacks, but their pressure has been consistent. For them to win this game they will need to take a page out of that Giants game plan and knock Ryan Fitzpatrick around to the point he does not feel comfortable in the pocket at all.

Texans Win If:

Under defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel, the Texans are a 3-4 defense that is very aggressive scheme-wise. We have heard all week about J.J. Watt and the problems he could present to this Cowboys offensive line with his disruptive play.

Crennel has to be aware of the rushing attack he is about to face and must guard against that. His answer to when teams try and spread him out and run the ball is to bring safety D.J. Swearinger down in the box like an extra linebacker and add Daniel Manning to the backend. If the Texans are able to limit Murray running the ball and put the Cowboys in some bad down and distance situations, especially on third down -- where the Texans are first in the league in getting off the field -- it will play right into their hands.

What makes the Texans so good in this area is their ability to put pressure on the quarterback with J.J. Watt, Brooks Reed and Jared Crick, but they also deny the ball on the outside with Jonathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson when they play press coverage. These Texans cornerbacks will get up on these Cowboys receivers and make them fight all day for space. How well these Cowboys receivers handle that will be a key in this game. The Cowboys offense is all about balance and if the Texans can get them out of that balance and make them a one dimensional team their chances for victory increase greatly.
