The league released a statement saying that Hussein Abdullah shouldn't have been penalized for his TD celebration last night. He slid on to his knees and prayed after scoring on the INT return.

Huh? They're seriously cowing to pressure from the PC crowd saying that they penalized him for PRAYING? What happened to the fact that they made it illegal to go to the ground during your celebration? That's why he was penalized, not that he was praying. Who gives a shit what religion he is. When he went to the ground, that's when he broke the rule. (as stupid as it is)

Spineless bastards. Just show them the rule, then tell them to STFU.
Pretty much.

Pretty much.
Not really.

It is about consistency. I don't see any difference between what he did and what a lot of other players have done, except, well, he was praying to Allah.

Exactly. They should be consistent and call it across the board. Or take the damn rule out. So yeah, pretty much.

I think that's awesome. There is no risk, and it's a great tribute to a very iconic cog in the game's history.

Was He penalized for praying? Or was he penalized for going to the ground during a celebration.

If the league admits that he was penalized for praying, then I will agree it is bullshit.

As an aside, in a classic makeup no call, he was not penalized later in the game for unsportsmanlike conduct after chopping a cheerleaders head off.

Too much?

Can you blame him? He took less money to "help the team" and they let his buddy Wes Welker walk without even really trying to spend some of the savings he gave them.
They signed Amendola for more than Welker was asking.

Your rant would be relevant if it weren't for the fact that they allow people (Christians) to go to their knees all the time after a score.

Awesome rant though.

NFL rules state you are allowed to place knees on the ground if praying. The refs didn't recognize his Muslim-technique as praying. Not sure how, though.

If Abdullah wasn't in a football uniform and on the streets, I'd run away like hell.

No way the league would ever be this openly politically incorrect. He went to the ground and the rules say he can't. They should penalize him or any other player that does it until they change the rule.

In that case, the rule is fucking stupid.

I think that's dumb. If you can't go to the ground, then you can't go to the ground. The NFL shouldn't be in the business of religion.

Did you see the play? He didn't just drop down and pray. He slid in to the endzone on his knees from a sprint. I've seen many people pray, both Muslim and Christian. Never that way, though.

Awesome counterpoint though.

It's all stupid. Our rules on TD celebrations could be thicker than a NY Times bestseller.

I can't wait for the day where a coach throws a challenge flag to challenge if a player's knee actually touched the field, ie Terrell Owens doing Usain Bolt years ago.

Y'all must not have seen the league lie down for the bus today. Open admission of egregious error.

Weird thing is aside for the instances of prayer, I believe they still allow Adrian Peterson to stop to one knee and point to the sky.

To me the simplest way to setup and enforce the rule consistently is to designate the areas of the playing field it is prohibited. The way the rule is written is making it incumbent on the referees to interpret whether it is praying. The structure of the rule is bad but can easily be corrected.
