ARLINGTON — Suspended defensive tackle Josh Brent will be able to return to the Cowboys on Monday, owner Jerry Jones confirmed after Sunday’s game.
Brent will still miss the first 10 games of the season, but he can return two weeks earlier than expected. He’ll only be able to work out and attend team meetings, not practice.
The original punishment handed down by commissioner Roger Goodell for Brent’s reinstatement called for him to become eligible to attend meetings and workouts starting in Week 7 and practice with the team in Week 9.
Week 9 remains the earliest he can practice and the earliest he would be able to play is Week 12 against the Giants. The Cowboys have a bye in Week 11.
Brent has been out of the league since Dec. 2012 when he was involved in a drunken driving accident that killed teammate and friend Jerry Brown.
“In no way does this diminish our sorrow for Jerry Brown, his family and his mother,” Jones said. “But Josh has a wish, he’d really like to have some success and financially help and take responsibility for Jerry Brown’s daughter.
“I know that he’s had a lot of time. He’s very contrite. He understands how much sorrow that he was responsible for. I think he’s going to be inspired to try to do the right thing.”
