We might be able to squeeze one of these guys under the cap if we were the only team after them but I don't see how we win any kind of bidding war -- assuming they prefer Jerry's sideshow over a franchise that might actually have a chance to go somewhere.

Both guys know this is the end of the line.

They are going to sign soon...and for as much money as they can get.

They would have to move, get kids in school, etc.

Why on earth would anyone wait on our mess of a situation until June 1st?

It may not help to sign Clabo, but we should be able to sign him with the 5 mill in available space being as 4 mill is the most I can see him making in year one.

By the time Free's release clears cap room, we can then use that 7 million or whatever to sign our rookies in time for camp.

Unless there's something I'm not taking into consideration, I'm thinking this scenario would work for us.
What about our draft picks? You have to be able to sign them before you can even draft, so I would assume that still applies here.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you're saying, but we can sign Clabo/Winston now and use the June 1st money (9 million with Spears and Free both) to sign the draftees.

Other than I don't think we can afford a veteran who will insist on a front-loaded contract.

I am no cap guru, but with $5M available, right now, can we afford a guy that wants more than that and actually get it done?

I do not think so. We have to have money for the rookie class as well.
We have $5m in cap space now. We need $5m to sign the rookies. We free up ANOTHER $5m by cutting Free, and that money will come free on June 1.

We do not have to sign the rookies till AFTER June 1. So why can't we use what we have right now to sign a veteran or two? We would then be getting money freed up on June 1 to free the rookies, who we NEVER sign until the eve of training camp in July-August.

My understanding is that even if we released him now we would not see the cap room until 1 Jun...so not sure how releasing him now would free up space to sign Clabo.
We don't need to free up space to sign Clabo. We have $5m right now.

The money that we see after June 1 would be used to sign the rookies.

We actually will free up 7 mill with Free, and another 2 mill with Spears.

We never sign draft picks until right before Camp so why would we need the cap space to do so prior to mid/late July?

Its obvious they haven't made a decision on free yet. Parnell would be better, IMO, or Clabo but that's gonna be a pricey meatball. I know for sure he'll ask for at least 50% more than he's worth.

Before the draft began we had to have enough to sign the draft picks...if we sign Clabo would we still have enough to sign our draft picks? If not, that is circumventing the cap.

Because you have to have the cap space available to sign the players before you even participate in the draft.

But the draft is over now, so we can sign Clabo and then use Free's money to sign the rookies in June/July before camp starts.

I believe that's correct.

I am all for signing him, but not sure how you cannot see that it is circumventing the cap. I still have not seen anyone post anything other than opinion on the matter either way.

And you believe this because you want it to be true or you know it is true?
I used the word believe because I'm not 100% on it.

The whole point in designating him a June 1 cut is your not supposed to know he going to be cut until then, or act on the anticipated savings. Against the rules.

I don't follow you.

How is it circumventing the cap if we're going to have the money before it's time to sign the rookies?

What in the world are you talking about? Plenty of teams cut players way before June and designate them as June 1st cuts.

Now, if this is true, then it would explain where Carp is coming from.

Before the draft you have to have cap available to sign your drafted players...now that we have drafted them it is OK to not have cap space available to sign them? That doesn't make sense to me at all...not sure how that is hard to follow. If I am wrong, so be it, but I don't see anything other than opinion on the matter now.
