Rob Ryan: DeMarco Murray will lead NFL in rushing if he stays healthy, Cowboys give him the ball

Former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan met with media members Friday afternoon.

Here are a few highlights from the current Saints defensive coordinator talking about facing his old team Sunday night.

– When asked about the Cowboys having a new offensive coordinator, Ryan responded: “They’ve had a change in coordinator, like they do every year.” The Cowboys are on their third offensive play caller in three seasons.

– On returning to Dallas: “I’m sure I’ll be cheered heavily there.”

– When asked about the current Cowboys players, Ryan said “there are some great people there” and then specifically mentioned Tony Romo, Dez Bryant and Sean Lee.

– More on Romo: “He’s brought back more teams than anybody. He’s a great quarterback. We know that.”

– Why has DeMarco Murray been so successful? Ryan: “They’re probably giving him the ball.”

– Ryan added: “I think if DeMarco Murray stays healthy and you give him the ball, he’s going to lead the league in rushing.”

Yea, I caught that little jab too.

He's probably wondering why the hell his defenses never got to rest in Dallas while the running game was there.
His own fault. He should have been at the Senior Bowl mouthing off that he was only looking at offensive lineman.

I said the same thing yesterday in the chatter thread. There's absolutely no excuse that this team should not have been playing this style of football last year. Granted the OL wasn't as good as it is now but they weren't a train wreck. They were solid and the running game was solid, particularly down the stretch. Last year Murray and the other backs were effective enough that we could have played this methodical style of football in order to protect our beat up and undermanned defense. But for some idiotic reason they refused to do so.

- Shorten the game.

- Fewer pass attempts equates to fewer opportunities for a mistake-prone QB to make a critical error

- Keep a bad defense off the field as much as possible with balanced play calling.

All basic concepts that a 12 year old playing Madden fully understands but for some reason took our organization 3 years to figure out.

He's not prone to mistakes as much as they are inevitable when you consistently target deep passes and pass too many times. No one does this and doesn't turn the ball over.

Even Peyton Manning runs the football at least once every set of downs. Tom Brady, Bree's, Ben Roethlisberger-- all of them do. Aaron Rodgers is the only one I've seen who can get away with this, and even he couldn't do it forever.
