Before the season started...if you said you are going to replace Ware, Hatcher, and Lee with Lawrence, Melton, and McClain there is no question in my mind that it is a talent downgrade.
I think you have to keep it in perspective though. Sean Lee missed half the season last year. Ware played most of the season hurt and didn't look very good. Hatcher was a stud last year but he was being replaced by a probowl talent at DT in Melton. Again it is mostly about the depth. It's not about Ware for Lawrence. It's about multiple guys for Ware. Fresh and healthy players are better then hurt and tired players.

I don't think anyone would choose our 3 replacements before the season started.

Correct.

We lost an ineffective Ware, but none of the guys who are taking his place at DE are better or even on par with him.....neither individually or as a collective.

Are we talking about the Ware from last season? Or are we talking about a healthy Ware? Ware from last season was not very good and it's certainly not a stretch to think the collective can provide us with the 6 sacks we saw last season and a guy hobbling around out there with one arm. People talk about Ware being some big loss from last season but the fact is he sucked last season. Now is a healthy Ware a loss? Absolutely, but that's not what we saw last year and we are specifically comparing this years defense to that of last year.

People keep forgetting who we were trotting out at DT besides Hatcher last year and who was spelling him,

Drake Nevis,Jarrius Wynn, Corey Irvin, Ceaser Rayford all of these guys were in the rotation IMO we have much better depth on the front 7.

Yes, I'm talking about last year's Ware.

Last year's Ware was average, but he still commanded attention. Nobody who plays the edge for us right now is commanding any extra attention. And I don't know if any of them are going to generate 6 sacks in a season while playing at 70%.

I do not think he's a big loss because I feel he's on his last legs, but he was still better than what we currently have at DE.

No but 2 or 3 of them will likely amass 6 sacks together which is the point. I also think you are overselling how well Ware played last year. He was down right bad and got abused in the running game. His pass rush was below average. Now I think it was a result of injuries but at minimum we have upgraded the run defense at that spot this year and probably maintain a similar pass rush if not improve a little on it.

Also while watching the Broncos game I was reminded of how nice it is to not have the constant offsides penalties on Ware. I swear he was called at least a couple of times against the Chiefs.

Uh Ware was not commanding any extra attention, I agree that we still do not have a guy who was as good as him last year but he was not getting any extra attention in the last 6 - 8 games.
