Confidence in Claiborne? 'Well, he's there'

September, 4, 2014

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Cornerback Morris Claiborne played poorly last season, missed the entire preseason due to injuries and has said he will need a pain-killing shot to his right shoulder before playing in Sunday’s season opener.

“Well, he’s there,” defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli said. “He’s our starting corner. That’s the confidence. He’s gotta go do it.”

Quite a ringing endorsement for the sixth overall pick in the 2012 draft, right?

Marinelli isn’t the kind of coach who massages a player’s ego just for the sake of being polite. The fact of the matter is that Claiborne hasn’t done anything to merit much confidence since the Cowboys traded their top two picks for the right to move up eight spots to select him.

A sprained AC joint in his left shoulder impacted Claiborne’s performance all last season, forcing him to wear a harness and undergo offseason surgery. He’s recovering from the same injury to his right shoulder, although this isn’t as serious and won’t require Claiborne to wear a harness.

Claiborne, who essentially regained his starting job when Orlando Scandrick was suspended for four games, still must play through pain with a lot to prove.

“The challenge for him to simply come back and be consistent, playing his position and all aspects of it,” head coach Jason Garrett said. “Did a really good job recovering from an injury at the end of last season and he had to deal with another one during training camp. He’s really worked hard to get himself healthy and ready to go.

“He has a chance to be a really good player for us and a complete player for us. Part of being a complete corner is being able to cover, play man, play zone but also be a physical player at the line of scrimmage and as a tackler. We feel like he’s improved in that area and hopefully this injury that he’s been dealing with doesn’t prevent him from being able to do that.”

As was the case last summer, Claiborne has downplayed concern about missing the entire preseason. He returned to practice last week and promised he’d be ready for Sunday’s season opener against the San Francisco 49ers.

“I’m not frustrated at all,” Claiborne said. “Where I’m at right now, I’m happy. I’m not upset at missing time or anything. I’m in a good place.”

That place is the starting lineup. It remains to be seen whether that’s good for the Cowboys.

I'll be surprised if he finishes the game.

I haven't even entertained the idea that it's a possibility. Which is going to be a real problem considering that they're apparently dressing only 4 CBs and 4 safeties for the game. JJ Wilcox or Jeff Heath could end up playing CB in the second half.

That is an admirable trait.

No one wanted Brockers/Wagner at the time but man that would have been a hell of a selection instead of Claiborne.

Always go front 7.

Always go for talent. They missed. Brockers and Wagner could have been Marvin Austin and Bruce Carter

That's true, although if it was up to most of us we would've ended up with DeCastro and probably someone like Kendall Reyes, Devon Still or Peter Konz, which would still be far better than Claiborne but not better than Brockers/Wagner.

"Well, he's there." :lol

What an absolute waste of a premium pick. An average at best talent with no heart.

I stated this before....if Claiborne weren't so injury-prone I could actually stomach him. He still wouldn't be worth the draft picks but at least be reliable and available. But he's constantly in and out of the lineup which makes it hard to get behind the guy.

I say the same thing about Sean Lee. He's a good player but he's not reliable. Despite his contract I start looking for other MLB options next year if I'm the Cowboys. That would be the smart football move to make rather than hoping he stays healthy, which never happens.

If white negro can't stay healthy in 2015 I cut his arse.

I wanted Fletcher Cox, and if we couldn't get him, I wanted to trade back and pick up some extra picks and go with DeCastro.

Hell, even DeCastro would've been better than this bum because he wouldn't have cost us multiple draft picks.

At least Sean Lee is a great player when he's on the field.

Claiborne is average at best and not once has he had a standout performance. He got one pick off Peyton Manning....big fucking deal.

As much as I hated Newman, he at least had some signature games where he was just on it and didn't allow for any completions. I'd be happy if Claiborne had a performance half that good.

Agreed, but he misses too much time. I'd rather bring in a guy who may not be as talented but who I can at least count on to be there.

Lee has missed a ton of time since 2011. I'm tired of hitching my wagon to brittle players, regardless of their talent.

It's like owning a Lamborghini but rarely getting to drive it because it's always in the shop.

I totally agree, I was just saying that at least Lee gives us something.

Claiborne is worthless.

Yeah that's the point I make when the discussion goes to the loss to the defense roster. It hard to miss them when they weren't in the lineup that much. Same with Spencer and Ware. They were/part time players..
