IRVING — When the Cowboys face San Francisco in the season opener, Henry Melton is expected to play for the first time in 350 days.
“I am excited,” the Cowboys’ defensive tackle said. “It’s going to be my first game week in almost a year.”
Almost 12 months have passed since Melton tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee when he was a member of the Chicago Bears.
After becoming the Cowboys’ prized free-agent acquisition earlier this year, a groin injury suffered in early August prevented him from playing in the preseason. Questions remain about Melton’s fitness and his ability to maintain his stamina over the course of four quarters. Melton, who practiced Monday, said he didn’t know if his workload would be scaled back against the 49ers.
“I am just going to go with the flow,” he said. “If they want to hold me to a certain amount of plays, I am just going to listen to them.”
That determination hasn’t been made, according to head coach Jason Garrett.
“We’ll see as the week goes on,” Garrett said. “The biggest thing for him is to get out there and practice, go against a live opponent and he was able to do some of that today.”
Now, he’s ready for the next step.
“I am excited and ready to go,” Melton said.
