Six days remain until the Cowboys open the regular season against San Francisco.

Now that the 53-man roster is set — except for being soft around the edges — and the players have returned to Valley Ranch after a weekend break to resume practice, let’s look back on what the Cowboys have done to prepare for the opener since landing in Southern California on July 22.

Content warning: This article contains facts that Cowboys fans may find disturbing. Some will be compelled to use strong language upon re-living the events. Reader discretion advised.

July 23 — Owner Jerry Jones said this is not a make-or-break year for head coach Jason Garrett in the annual state of the team address. He added that Josh Brent deserves an opportunity to resume his career after serving time for a drunk-driving incident that took the life of best friend and teammate, Jerry Brown Jr.

July 24 — Quarterback Tony Romo declared he’s healthy after back surgery and added that “you’ll see the best version of me” over next four to five years.

July 25 — Romo was held out of the second day of practice. The quarterback has yet to practice more than two consecutive days since training camp began.

July 29 — Rookie DeMarcus Lawrence, expected to start at right defensive end, left the practice field on a cart. He fractured his right foot and will open the season on injured reserve, meaning the earliest he can play is late October or early November.

July 30 — Left tackle Tyron Smith signed a 10-year deal worth $109.7 million. Morris Claiborne hurt his right knee and left practice. This and an injured shoulder forced the cornerback to be held out of all preseason games for a second consecutive season.

Aug. 1 — Season ticket package, which include postseason tickets for what the club calls conveniences, are mailed to Cowboys fans.

Aug. 3 — Receiver Dez Bryant and safety J.J. Wilcox engaged in the first fight of training camp.

Aug. 5 — Suggestive photos of Jones with two women surfaced on the internet.

Aug. 6 — Executive vice president Stephen Jones took the Cowboys bus to the Sunset Strip to entertain. Dean Blandino, the NFL’s vice president of officiating, is among the people on the bus caught by TMZ cameras.

Aug. 7 — Brent met with commissioner Roger Goodell in New York to seek his reinstatement. The Cowboys lost their first preseason game to the Chargers 27-7 in San Diego.

Aug. 9 — Cornerback Brandon Carr reported after missing the first 17 days of camp to deal with the death of his mother to cancer.

Aug. 10 — Jerry Jones acknowledged the suggestive photos for the first and only time publicly, calling them a misrepresentation.

Aug. 11 — Cornerback Orlando Scandrick was suspended for the first four games of season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Aug. 12 — Scandrick apologized for his actions. Cornerback B.W. Webb engaged in a brief skirmish with a fan during practice between the Oakland Raiders and Cowboys.

Aug. 13 — Sgt. Dan Shrubb of the Oxnard police department said there are 60 officers, not counting those undercover, at the second day of practice between the Cowboys and Raiders. That’s an increase of 20 over the day before.

Aug. 14 — Amobi Okoye was cleared to take part in contact drills. The defensive tackle had been in a coma for 145 days with encephalitis.
Aug. 16 — The Cowboys lost their second preseason game to Baltimore, 37-30.

Aug. 23 — The Cowboys lost third preseason game to Miami, 25-20. The first team offense finished the preseason with 224 yards, three punts, two field goals, a touchdown and a touchdown allowed on seven possessions.

Aug. 25 — Linebacker DeVonte Holloman announced his retirement at the age of 23 due to spinal stenosis.

Aug. 27 — Jerry Jones declared at the Cowboys kickoff luncheon that the team faces an uphill battle in 2014. Garrett told fans his team can’t promise much, but he can promise the team will fight. Bryant met with Jones for the second time in 24 hours about a long-term contract extension.

Aug. 28 — Safety Jakar Hamilton was suspended for four games for violating the league’s substance abuse program. Webb, a fourth round pick from the 2013 draft, was released. An extensive article is published by ESPN.com in which Jerry Jones indicated former coach Jimmy Johnson won’t be inducted in the Ring of Honor because he’s disloyal, stated he’s still mad at his son Stephen and others for talking him out of drafting quarterback Johnny Manziel and portrayed a cell phone conversation between the Cowboys owner and Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson after a George Strait concert.

Aug. 28 — The Cowboy lost their fourth game to Denver 27-3 to go winless in preseason for first time in 14 years. The 116 points allowed by the defense is second most in franchise history for four preseason games.

And that is what the Cowboys have done up to this point to get ready for the season opener.

Yeah, nothing that we didn't know already. I think it was more geared towards fans that don't pay as much attention as we do.
