The Dallas Cowboys scored big when they struck an estimated $500 million, 25-year deal with AT&T for their stadium naming rights last July.
But it almost didn’t happen.
Owner Jerry Jones told ESPN.com, he considered investing $300 million in Chanel or Cartier, becoming partners with one of the firms and slapping its name on his stadium.
“Can you imagine — the Chanel Cowboys?” he asked. “Or the Cartier Cowboys? Now that has a nice ring, a lovely ring. Pure class.”
Why did Jones settle on AT&T?
“It just sounds like America — and the future.”
It also was extremely lucrative. “I was a whore!” Jones said with what ESPN referred to as “that just-kidding smile chased by that maybe-not wink.”
As for the fans, they didn’t like the AT&T choice.
SportsDay also suggested some other names for Cowboys Stadium that seemed more appropriate at the time.
